Wake Forest outhit Pitt 15-3 and struck out 10 batters to pick up their second-straight victory.
Lowder, who earned his fourth victory of the season on Friday, tossed five strong innings with four strikeouts and allowed just three runs.
His performance was more than enough for the Demon Deacons (19-27, 9-22 ACC)Â offense outhit the Panthers (22-18, 16-16 ACC) 15-3, plating all 12 runs in a three-inning span. Over the course of their run, Wake Forest strung together clutch at-bats with their backs against the wall, scoring 10 of their runs with two outs.
Camden Minacci was the first Wake Forest pitcher out of the bullpen, fanning four batters in two scoreless innings. Brennen Oxford induced the next trio of outs, striking out a batter while giving up no runs.
Michael Turconi and Shane Muntz led the Deacs at the plate with three hits a piece, while Brendan Tinsman scored a team-best three runs in the win. In the leadoff spot, Lucas Costello was responsible for a third of the Deacs' runs, tallying a career-high tying four RBIs.
How It Happened
- Pitt jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the opening half inning.
- A leadoff walk and a single placed a pair of Panthers on base before a pair of ground outs moved both runners over, resulting in the first run of the game.
- Rhett Lowder fanned his first batter of the game for the third out of the inning.
- The Deacs threatened with two outs in the home half of the inning as Brock Wilken (double) and Seymour (walked) reached base. A passed ball advanced the duo to second and third, but a pop up ended the scoring opportunity.
- Lowder tossed a perfect three up, three down top of the second, including another inning-ending punchout.
- A two-out, two-RBI double from Lucas Costello gave Wake Forest a 2-1 lead after two innings of action.
- Shane Muntz and Brendan Tinsman were plated on the extra-base hit. The duo advanced after a groundout to the pitcher.
- Pitt tied the game at 2 in the top of the third thanks to a SAC fly.
- The Deacs responded with a four-run third inning, taking a 6-2 advantage after a leadoff home run from Brock Wilken, a two-RBI triple from Pierce Bennett and a RBI single from Brendan Tinsman.
- Wilken's blast marked the 17th this season, tying the Wake Forest freshman record set back in 2001.
- The Panthers launched a leadoff solo home run to cut into Wake Forest's lead (6-3) to open the fourth.
- The Deacs turned a double play for the first pair of outs in the frame before inducing a pop up to get out of the inning.
- The Deacs' offense exploded in the bottom half of the inning, plating six runs on five hits to increase their lead to 12-3.
- Seymour opened the scoring with a two-run blast over the left field wall, his 20th HR of the season.
- Wake Forest loaded the bases thanks to a Shane Muntz double and walks to Michael Ludowig and Brendan Tinsman. Bennett was walked to bring home Muntz, and RBI singles from Costello and Turconi plated Ludowig, Tinsman and Bennett.
- Lowder tossed a hitless and scoreless top half of the fifth, including a pair of punchouts.
- Camden Minacci took over the pitching duties, fanning back-to-back batters to end the top half of the sixth inning as Wake Forest continued to hold a 12-3 advantage.
- Minacci once again fanned a pair of batters, upping his game total to four after his second-straight scoreless inning.
- Turconi found the gap in left center for a one-out single, but the shortstop was stranded after a fly out and fielder's choice.
- Brennen Oxford took over for Minacci, registering a scoreless eighth inning as Wake Forest continued to lead 12-3.
- The left hander fanned a Panther to end the frame.
- Seth Keener and Crawford Wade both hit the mound in the ninth inning as the Panthers plated a pair of runs to cut into Wake Forest's lead (12-5). Keener struck out a batter for the first out of the inning before Wade induced a 6-4-3 double play to clinch the contest and the series.
Brock Wilken is now at the top of the Wake Forest record book for most home runs by a freshman as his solo shot in the third marked the 17th long-fly of his first collegiate season, tying a 20-year old record set by Jamie D'Antona.
Bobby Seymour's fourth inning home run marked the 20th of his junior season, already adding to his career high and moving him up in the Wake Forest record books to fourth in home runs for a single season and sole possession of 10th all-time in career blasts. Additionally, his season mark is tied for the ACC lead and stands second in the entire nation.
Words From Walter
"I did not think that Rhett (Lowder) had his best stuff today, but he battled and found a way to get out. He walked a few more guys then we are used to seeing, however he got us five innings and the offense came through. We had 10 RBI with two outs, so it was good to see our offense come through in clutch situations. The Pierce Bennett triple was the play of the game. I thought Camden Minacci was really good today and we were excited to see him throw the ball well. It was a good team win and we have some good momentum headed into senior day. We have a senior on the mound tomorrow, William Fleming, and we will get all our seniors in the game tomorrow and excited for the opportunity to have them go out on a good note."
On Deck
Wake Forest will close out the regular season on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the game, the program will recognize graduating seniors during a pregame ceremony that will begin approximately 30 minutes prior to first pitch.
