The Demon Deacons were four shots shy of making the cut for match play.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The Wake Forest women's golf team fell just short of reaching match play at the 2021 NCAA Championships. Stanford freshman Rachel Heck won the individual title.
After battling for three days of stroke play, Wake Forest made the first cut to 15 teams for the final round of stroke play on Monday. The top eight teams at the end of Monday advanced to the match play quarterfinals.
Paired with Arizona State and Florida State, the eighth spot came down to those final three teams. The Deacs hit a series of unfortunate events on the final six holes so it came down to Arizona and Florida State in the final group on the final hole. Going into the hole, Florida State was in the top eight by one stroke and Arizona sat in a tie break position with Arizona State. A double bogey from the Seminoles and a birdie from the Wildcats got Arizona the spot and Florida State fell out of contention.
The quarterfinal match will take place Tuesday morning and the semifinal match will follow in the afternoon. The Championship match will be Wednesday afternoon and will air on the Golf Channel.
Coach's Comments
"We didn't end the way we wanted, which stinks. There is no way around that, but we are a family. We go through the highs together like we did a couple years ago and we go through the lows together like we did this week. That is what makes us a family and that is what will get us through to the next level. We have an incredibly talented team and know we can go the distance. This experience will make us stronger and we will be better for it."
On Siyun and Emilia…
"Swing and Emilia have left their mark on this program and on Wake Forest. We will miss them tremendously next year. They were amazing captains this year and last year and helped us navigate one of the most challenging times. They truly set the standard for excellence and what it means to represent the black and gold at the highest level."
