SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The Wake Forest men's golf team played through temperatures above 98 degrees on Friday afternoon at Grayhawk Golf Club for the first round of NCAA Championship play.
The Deacs had the second highest number of birdies out of the 30 teams competing for the title. The Deacs' 16 birdies were just three short of Oklahoma State's 19. They followed up with 48 pars to finish the first day of play in a five-way tie for 10th place.
Junior Alex Fitzpatrick and top Deac in the lineup led the charge today. Three birdies in a row on his second nine holes got him at high as sixth place on the individual leaderboard. His four birdies on the day were the most for any Deac.
Sophomore Mark Power and freshman Michael Brennan also had four birdies each. Three of Power's four came on his second nine holes with Brennan registering two on the front and two on the back. Seniors Parker Gillam and Eric Bae each chipped in a pair of birdies as well.
Wake Forest tee times for the second round will begin at 10:05 a.m. ET on Saturday. The Deacs will keep their pairing with Pepperdine and Illinois.
