The Deacs fanned 16 Phoenix batters on Saturday night.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest struck out Elon batters for nearly two-thirds of their outs, but could not overcome a five-run sixth frame, falling to the Phoenix 5-2 at David F. Couch Ballpark on Saturday night.
The Deacs (15-23, 7-19 ACC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Phoenix (17-18, 8-7 CAA) in the second game of the home-and-home series, with runs scored by Bobby Seymour and Shane Muntz. Niine of the team's 10 hits came in the first five innings. Michael Turconi and Pierce Bennett led Wake Forest with two hits each.
Ryan Cusick started for the Deacs on the mound, striking out 11 batters in six innings of work while conceding five earned runs. His 11 K's marked his fifth double-digit outing this season, and the second time he fanned 11 batters in 2021. The Sudbury, Mass. native is now eight strikeouts away from 200 career strikeouts.
Reed Mascolo finished the game on the hill, striking out five Phoenix batters in the final three innings to keep Elon off the scoreboard.
How It Happened
"A disappointing loss with Ryan Cusick on the mound. He was cruising early, obviously ran into one bad inning. Offensively, we need to do a better job. We needed to score more than two runs and find a way to win that game. Unfortunately, we didn't. We've got to bounce back and play well tomorrow."
