Haas led the Deacs to their 11th NCAA Championship Appearance in his time at the helm in 2021
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest University has extended the contract of longtime Demon Deacons men's golf head coach Jerry Haas, director of athletics John Currie announced Tuesday.
"Coach Jerry Haas leads our storied men's golf program with dignity and integrity, developing student-athletes on and off the course," Currie said. "Coach Haas has tutored so many talented All-ACC and All-America golfers that have gone on to do special things professionally and make Wake Forest proud. Collegiate golf is more competitive than ever, and Coach Haas has continued to ensure that the Demon Deacons are a mainstay in NCAA competition. I believe that we are poised to break through and add to our ACC and NCAA championship history in the next few years under Coach Haas' leadership."
"I am honored and very excited about the present and future of Wake Forest golf," Haas said. "I would like to thank John Currie and Ron Wellman for their belief in our staff over the years and coach Aaron O'Callaghan for his dedication to the success of Wake Forest golf. There is nowhere else I'd rather be than in Winston-Salem leading this historic program that means so much to myself and my entire family."
Haas recently led the Deacs their 11th berth in the NCAA Championship in his tenure, having earned a bid to the NCAA Regionals in 23 of his 24 years at the helm of the Demon Deacon men's golf program, winning the NCAA Regional three times (2005, 2006, 2008). The Deacons finished 13th in 2021, following an quarterfinal finish in 2019.
He arrived at his alma mater in 1997, with the men's golf program in need of a rebuild to return to the standards set by legendary coach Jesse Haddock and his first star, Arnold Palmer.
In the 24 seasons since Haas took over as head coach, Wake Forest men's golf teams have won a total of 40 tournament titles, including at least a share of three tournaments in 2021. Haas' golfers have been named All-Conference by the ACC 38 times and have been named All-Americans 22 times during his tenure.
Haas has sent many Wake Forest golfers on to success in the professional ranks, including Bill Haas, the 2011 FedEx Cup Champion, Webb Simpson, the 2012 U.S. Open Champion, Will Zalatoris, the only player to finish inside the top eight at the 2020 U.S. Open, 2021 Masters and 2021 PGA Championship, Cameron Young, who won back-to-back tournaments on the Korn Ferry Tour in May, and many other Demon Deacons have spent time on the PGA and Korn Ferry Tours following their Wake Forest careers.
A 1985 graduate of Wake Forest, Haas spent nine years playing professionally on the Nike, European and PGA Tours, playing in over 115 events on the PGA Tour from 1990 to 1995, earning myriad top 25 finishes and earning over $319,000 in prize money.
Haas is a long-standing member of the Wake Forest golf family. Jerry's brother, Jay Haas, led Wake Forest to back-to-back NCAA championships in the 1970s, while Bill -- Jay's son and Jerry's nephew -- played for the Deacons from 2001 to 2004, earning National Player of the Year honors two times and All-ACC honors four times before going on to win seven tournament titles on the PGA Tour.
