Good morning Demon Deacon Nation!
With women's soccer already capturing the first two Wake Forest wins of the fall semester and an electric crowd and atmosphere that included President Susan R. Wente, Ph.D. last Saturday night at Spry Stadium for our men's soccer final exhibition match, everyone on our beautiful Reynolda campus can feel the excitement in the air as the 2021-22 academic year is underway!
Thanks to the leadership and planning of our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Associate AD Ashley Wechter, 350 student-athletes had fun at our Back to School Bash at Kentner Stadium on Monday night. Our coaches and staff witnessed our student-athletes compete in fun and unique games followed by an ice cream social afterwards. These experiences and community-style events are another element of a World Class Student-Athlete Experience.
It was an outstanding way to end the first day of classes of the fall semester. I encourage you to watch President Wente's inspirational message about discovery to our student body!
With 10 events between Thursday and Sunday this week, including three home soccer contests at Spry Stadium this Thursday night at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., it's go time for the Demon Deacons!
Additionally, it is special to host The Winston-Salem Open again this year for the 10th time as Wake Forest Athletics continues to bring Value to the University, Winston-Salem and Triad Community. The ATP Tour event featured a host of Demon Deacons including Noah Rubin taking on three-time Grand Slam singles champion Andy Murray on Monday. Additionally, Matthew Thompson and Siddanth Banthia have been competing in doubles action and Eduardo Nava saw action at the Open last night.
The Winston-Salem Open is just another example of why I love living in Winston-Salem - the best neighborhood in North Carolina!
ACC, Big 10 & Pac-12 Alliance
Yesterday, the ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences announced a formal alliance to promote collaboration, stability and cooperation in the highest level of college athletics. Commissioner Jim Phillips, President Wente and the ACC Board of Directors and the ACC athletics directors have been in regular conversation over the last month defining initial concepts for this alliance.
The intent of this alliance is to collaborate on the evolution of college athletics, including concepts for inter‐conference scheduling. The three-conference alliance brings together 41 like-minded institutions guided by a commitment to, and prioritization of, supporting student‐athlete well‐being, academic and athletic opportunities and experiences, and diverse educational programming. Thirty-four of the institutions, including Wake Forest, rank among America's top 100 Universities. Deepening our affiliation with like-minded institutions is good for the Demon Deacons.
ACC Network & Broadcast Information
The momentum of the ACC Network (ACCN) continues to build as Disney and Mediacom announced a new multi-year distribution that includes ACCN for Mediacom customers. Just two years after launch, ACCN is now available in nearly 70 million homes nationwide - and still growing. To ensure you don't miss any of the Demon Deacon action, please visit GetACCNetwork.com to ensure that your cable provider has the ability for you to sign up!
Wake Forest's men's soccer game tomorrow night and women's soccer contest on Sunday afternoon will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra (ACCNX). Meanwhile, our men's soccer match on Sunday night will be live on the ACC Network "channel" at 7 p.m. Wake Forest assistant AD James Overstreet leads a talented group of multimedia & broadcast operations staff in Athletics, who produced their first of this year's many live ACCN broadcasts this past Sunday.
Please join our student-athletes, coaches and staff in a tip of the Deacon top hat to James, Everett, Drew, Wes, Jason and Greg for their extraordinary effort and dedication as they are set to produce at least 35 games this fall for men's and women's soccer, volleyball and field hockey on ACCN and ACCNX.
James and his crew also produced the ACC Network's show, Road Trip, which provided an inside look into Wake Forest football's fall training camp. The final airing of the show will be Saturday night at 7 p.m. on ACC Network.
