Gameday is here Demon Deacon Nation!
Tonight at 7:00 p.m. we kick off the 2021-22 competition year as Wake Forest women's soccer hosts UIC at Spry Stadium live on ACC Network Extra. And, as you will learn in this special edition of From the Quad, today we are also launching a celebration of 50 Years of Women's Intercollegiate Athletics at Wake Forest, presented by Blue Cross NC!
As we shared in our announcement of the Robert Grant and Kenneth "Butch" Henry Trailblazer Award a few weeks ago, one of the greatest strengths of higher education is the opportunity for a dynamic journey of discovery; and at Wake Forest we are passionate about seeking knowledge, growth and understanding. The calling of Pro Humanitate is to use that knowledge and truth to better the lives of people and unite our communities.
Scholars, trailblazers, leaders, and champions.
These adjectives, and so many more, describe the women who have worn the Old Gold & Black in athletics competition for Wake Forest over the past 50 years.
From the spirit of the White Jackets, who were talented and successful women that competed in intramural athletics prior to the 1971-72 academic year, through the leadership of Dorothy "Dot" Casey and Marge Crisp, later the first two women elected to the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame, and all the championships and honors since, our University community is excited to celebrate Wake Forest's proud history of women's athletics.
Wake Forest's achievements in women's athletics include 87 individual and 12 team Atlantic Coast Conference championships, three individual and three team NCAA championships and 16 ACC Players of the Year awards earned. Even more impressive is the character of these women and their impactful and accomplished post-graduate careers.
The past year has reinforced the value of the student-athlete experience and the power of being a part of something far greater than oneself. With the support of dedicated coaches, Trustees, Deacon Club donors, faculty, and administrators, five decades of Wake Forest women student-athletes have played a significant role in strengthening our nine intercollegiate teams in pursuit of our goal of a World Class Student-Athlete Experience.
The humble beginnings of some of the very best programs in the country and the unique stories of our female student-athletes will be highlighted throughout the 2021-22 academic year. Wake Forest Athletics is excited to host several special reunions at individual sporting events culminating the year with a grand celebration event next spring.
We encourage you to share in this celebration over the next year as we feature many of our incredible alumnae, sharing their journeys and perspectives in the form of feature articles, podcasts, videos and more. All content will be shared on GoDeacs.com and through our social media platforms and showcased at events this year.
And, in this spirit of honoring the past and building the future, we invite the Wake Forest community to learn more about opportunities to participate directly in supporting specific Demon Deacon teams and initiatives.
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to commemorating and celebrating the 50th anniversary of Wake Forest women's athletics with you.
As always, continue to send me your thoughts, questions, and suggestions to wfuad@wfu.edu.
