Junior Shayla Smart collected her second goal of the young season in the third minute while senior Ryanne Brown scored the seventh goal of her career in the first half. In the second half, graduate transfer Jenna Menta earned her first goal as a Demon Deacon in the 84th minute.

SMART MAKES HISTORY
Shayla Smart tallied the game-winning score as the Demon Deacons earned their 300th program win with a 1-0 shutout victory over UIC Thursday night in the home opener at Spry Stadium.
After a scoreless opening half, the winning tally came in the 84th minute as Smart collected the ball after a Jenna Menta assist where she turned and launched the ball to the bottom right corner. It was the fourth career goal for Smart and the first of the 2021 campaign.
NEW YEAR, NEW TEAM
The Deacs return 20 letterwinners from last year's squad, highlighted by Ryanne Brown, Giovanna DeMarco, Sofia Rossi and ACC All-Freshman Team member Sophie Faircloth.
Wake Forest welcomes a signing class of 16 that was rated No. 37 in the country and No. 7 in the ACC by TopDrawerSoccer.com. The Deacs added 15 true freshmen and one graduate transfer - Jenna Menta from Georgetown - that look to make an immediate impact this season.
SCOUTING VCU

The Ram attack is paced by three forwards in Samantha Jerabek, Emma Kershner and Aileen Guthrie, who each scored a goal, respectively.
