WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — When Wake Forest lines up for its season opener, it will do so with the No. 1 men's and No. 9 women's teams in the Southeast Region. The preseason regional poll was released Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The USTFCCCA released its first set of regional rankings on Monday afternoon, and the men's squad were selected as preseason favorites for the 2021 campaign. The rankings come after Wake Forest men's squad captured the highest finish since 1996, placing 15th at the 2020 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
This season will mark the sixth for the cross country programs under John Hayes and third for Ashley Bastron.
The men of Wake Forest are one of six ACC teams ranked within the men's preseason southeast regional rankings, and one of three inside the top five. The Deacs return all-conference performers Zach Facioni, Carter Coughlin and Jonathan Velasco from last year's ACC third place team.
The men's team welcomed Thomas Vanoppen, Ryanrd Swanepoel and Justin Robison to the roster to help bolster a strong lineup.
The women of Wake Forest were selected ninth in the southeast regional. Madeline Rehm is the top returner for the Demon Deacons after placing 34th at the ACC championship, respectively. The Deacs welcome back four of their top six— Madeline Rehm, Elise Wright, Zoe Clay and Hana Castimanes.
The Deacs also welcome Carolien Millenaar, Laura Giudice, and Leigh Walters.
