Wake Forest shaved nine strokes off their score from Monday and moved up three positions on the leaderboard.
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -- The No. 14 Wake Forest men's golf team made a move up the leaderboard in the second round of the prestigious Southwestern Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.
The Deacs shaved nine strokes off their score from a day ago, recording a second round team score of 286 (-2). It was the fourth lowest score in the tournament in round two and saw the Demon Deacons move up three spots, passing SMU, USC and San Jose State.
Wake Forest also enters the final round on Wednesday tied with No. 8 Texas for seventh in the tournament and are within four strokes of fifth.
Sophomore Michael Brennan continues to lead the Demon Deacons on the individual leaderboard as he is in search of his third individual title of the season, entering Wednesday. He is tied for sixth in the field and one of just six players in the 64-man field to card two rounds of 70 or lower.
Brennan turned in his second consecutive 70 (-2) and will head into tomorrow just four strokes off the individual lead.
Senior Alex Fitzpatrick and Parker Gillam were the other two Demon Deacons to finish Tuesday under par. Fitzpatrick, who is even par for the tournament and tied for 22nd on the individual leaderboard, turned in a round of 71 (-1), limiting his scorecard to just three bogies.
Gillam rebounded on the second day of the tournament as he tied Brennan for the lowest round for the team with a 70 (-2). It helped him make the fourth largest jump on the individual leaderboard, moving up 16 spots.
The Demon Deacons will tee off their final round of play on Wednesday at 11:56 a.m., playing alongside Texas, San Diego State and UCLA off hole one.
From Coach Haas:
"We looked like a better golf team today and the rust is starting to come off. That being said, so much work ahead as we could've been seven to 10-under today. The things that we struggle with are correctable and we will correct them. The players have wonderful attitudes and compete at the highest level. Hopefully each and every round we will learn about their game and how we can improve." - Coach Jerry Haas
