Summiel Records Career High in Loss to Miami

The junior forward totaled a career-best 14 points in the game on 6-of-10 shooting from the field as the Deacs fell to Miami, 66-59.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest women's basketball team split the season series with the Miami Hurricanes after falling at home Thursday night, 66-59.

The Demon Deacons (12-9, 2-8 ACC) were led by a career-high performance from junior forward Olivia Summiel, netting 14 points in the defeat to the Hurricanes (11-7, 4-4 ACC) on 6-of-10 shooting from the field.

Summiel also grabbed six rebounds while also adding a pair of assists and a block.

Sophomore guard Jewel Spear equaled that effort with 14 points of her own, including hitting four threes. It moves her within two threes of career top 10. In just 46 career games, she has knocked down 125 three-pointers. The record is owned by Cotelia Bond Young (2003-06), who over the course of her career hit 267 threes.

Fellow sophomore Demeara Hinds had one of her best rebounding games in her career, pulling down 10 boards. Seven of those came on the offensive glass, as the Deacs grabbed 16 total offensive rebounds, which resulted in 19 second-chance points.

Hinds also added seven points, coming three points away from her second career double-double performance.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Wake Forest's first bucket came from a Jewel Spear three-pointer with 8:16 to go in the opening frame.

  • Olivia Summiel, Elise Williams and Christina Morra each chipped into the Deacons' scoring column in the first quarter.

    • Summiel knocked down her first three-pointer of the game to tie it up at 13 with just over four minutes remaining.

  • After a Miami turnover, Spear gave the Deacs their first lead of the evening after netting her second trey ball.

  • Wake Forest connected on three of its first four attempts from beyond the arc, trailing 19-18 after the first ten minutes.

    • The Deacs capitalized off of turnovers in the opening period, plugging in six points.

  • Williams immediately scored first on a short corner jumper in the second frame, giving Wake Forest another small lead.

    • The two teams traded baskets composed of the first 5:30 in quarter two. Miami struggled from three-point land but found its way near the rim.

  • Demeara Hinds gave the Deacons a spark in the second quarter. She tallied a bucket, three offensive rebounds and a block in five minutes.

  • Miami went on a 7-0 run late in the second period before Summiel finished a driving layup to bring Wake Forest back to within four with just over 90 seconds remaining in the half.

  • Williams connected on her first three-pointer of the game to shorten the Hurricanes' lead to three, heading into intermission.

    • At the half, Williams and Summiel led Wake Forest with seven points each.

    • The Deacons shot 44 percent from distance in the first half.

    • Seven players scored for Wake Forest before halftime.

  • Alexandria Scruggs opened up the scoring in the second half, tying the scoreboard at 32 with a triple from the left wing.

  • Spear followed with a three-pointer of her own from the opposite wing not long afterward. Nevertheless, Miami evened the score again, 39-39, once a media timeout arrived.

    • Wake Forest continued to do well in forcing turnovers by the Hurricanes, upping the total to nine.

  • Miami got on another 7-0 run in the latter part of the third quarter, extending its margin to 44-39. However, back-to-back shots by Summiel made it a tied ball game once again.

  • Spear swished in two makes from the charity stripe, and the Wake Forest defense got another final stop to step into the fourth period ahead, 46-44.

    • Summiel was the first Deacon to reach double-figures in points.

    • Miami went on a scoring drought for the quarter's final three and a half minutes.

  • The fourth quarter began as a scrappy one, as Hinds finished a traditional three-point play to keep Wake Forest in front, 51-47.

    • Battling on the glass, the Deacons controlled the paint well for second-chance looks, led by Hinds.

  • At the five-minute mark, Miami scored from outside to again tie things up for the ninth time, 52-52. Spear responded quickly with a stepback to the side for an open release.

  • After Miami finished three times in a row at the basket, Wake Forest called for a timeout, trailing by three.

    • The Hurricanes put in another two points leading into the final minute, up 60-55.

  • Out of another timeout break, Wake Forest tried to make something happen, but closing free throws by the Hurricanes put a cap on the evening, 66-59.

    • Olivia Summiel and Jewel Spear led the Deacs with 14 points apiece while Demeara Hinds grabbed ten rebounds including seven offensive boards.

    • Wake Forest shot 38 percent from three-point distance and recorded 19 second-chance points during the contest.

FROM HOOVER

"I am really proud of the way we took care of the ball tonight, but we have to do a better job on the glass and especially down the stretch. Demeara Hinds had a great game especially getting offensive rebounds and second-chance looks for us. I love this team's determination to get back to playing a full 40 minutes of tough Wake Forest basketball." - Head Coach Jen Hoover
