JUNO BEACH, Fla. - The Wake Forest Women's golf team will take the top seed into Wednesday's championship match at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup at Seminole Golf Club.
The Deacs will face the reigning NCAA Champions in the Stanford Cardinal. Stanford and Wake Forest are currently ranked No. 1 and No. 2 nationally.
Senior Rachel Kuehn led the way for the Deacs, earning her fifth-career individual title with a tournament score of 10-under 206. Two other Deacs also finished inside the top 10, with sophomore Carolina Chacarra coming in tied for third and senior Lauren Walsh coming in tied for eighth. Both finished under par at -5 and -3, respectively.
Wake Forest led the field in scoring on par three and par four holes and also led the seven-team field in birdies with 58 over 54 holes. Kuehn led all players on scoring for par fours and Walsh led scoring on par threes.
Chacarra, Kuehn and Emilia Migliaccio started the day right for the Deacs, with all three going one under or sitting even par after the first three holes of the day. Chacarra made the turn at two under, Kuehn at even par and Migliaccio at one over. Between all five players, Wake Forest had 12 birdies on the second nine holes to extend their lead from three strokes at the turn to six strokes by the end of the day.
Coach's Comments
"We have a very experienced team, and they have all played a lot of high-level golf. These are the moments and tournaments we train for all year, so we are very pleased with the top seed heading into tomorrow. Stanford is obviously an extremely talented team and it's an honor to play against them. We will go in tonight and get some rest and be ready to bring our best game to the match tomorrow.
Rachel works so hard and really thrives off her teammates' success just as much as her own. She is extremely competitive and wants to win for herself but also for the team, they are all very close and play for each other. Her play down the stretch today really showed what kind of competitor she is, and we are very happy for her to get the individual win today." - head coach Kim Lewellen
