Different Standouts Shine in Volleyball Sunday Victory over Eagles

10/2/2022 5:01:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Peyton Suess led the way and Lauren Strain had a career day!

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Back on its home floor for a Sunday afternoon (Oct. 2) outing, Wake Forest volleyball (10-5, 2-2) took care of business in rounding out its weekend with a 3-1 win over Boston College (13-5, 1-3). The win was the Demon Deacons' first in a home conference match this fall (25-21, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20).

Andrea Fuentes officially moved her way up into the program's records for career assists during Sunday, now resting at No. 12 on the all-time list with 1,306 assists dished out during her time with the Black and Old Gold.

Peyton Suess was a force on the hitting end for Wake Forest, going for 18 kills on a .484 attacking percentage. The senior's total mark in kills was her second-highest of the season, along with the seventh time she has her team in that statistical column.

Lauren Strain had a career day, tallying eight kills on 10 attacks (.800). A new face for Wake Forest, it was the junior's best line of the 2022 campaign thus far.

Paige Crawford impressed with 13 kills and four digs. Emmy Ogogor added 10 kills and five blocks.

Emma Farrell and Kalani Whillock finished with 15 digs apiece – it was a season-best for the latter.

Rian Baker and Fuentes orchestrated the Deacon offense with 29 and 21 assists, respectively. Baker also totaled eight digs and two service aces. Olivia Franke chipped in five blocks on the defensive side.

Wake Forest moved to 18-10 in the all-time series versus Boston College.

How it Happened

  • Paige Crawford initiated the scoring for Wake Forest, netting the team's first kill.

  • Short rallies were then traded between the two sides, as the score sat at 6-6.

  • Wake Forest succeeded on its next pair of attacks, while Boston College struggled with its own attempts.

  • After the score became even again (10-10), Kalani Whillock started a quick, short run for the Deacs before the Eagles signaled for a timeout.

    • Wake Forest led 13-10 at the time.

  • Errors by Boston College out of the break allowed the Deacons to stay in front, 17-12.

    • However, the Eagles found a groove in their tempo, using a 4-1 push to trail closely behind, 18-16.

    • Wake Forest called for a timeout.

  • Crawford first delivered a kill and service ace before Olivia Franke and Audrey Douglas rose for an assisted block to give Wake Forest three more points.

  • Boston College answered with a service ace but then suffered a service error, down 23-18.

  • Douglas put her Deacs at set point in the first with a right-sided land.

  • Boston College notched an ace afterward, but Peyton Suess would be the one to seal the frame on a crafted kill during a final lengthy rally.

  • Wake Forest won the first set, 25-21.

    • Crawford led all individuals with six kills during the opening set.

  • After an early tie of 3-3 in set two, Wake Forest again gained control.

      • The senior grabbed two kills and a solo block during a trio of possessions for the Black and Old Gold.

      • Wake Forest led 12-8 at the time.

  • Crawford threw a ball down next, reaching her seventh kill.

  • After Wake Forest upped its advantage to 15-12, Boston College took a break on the floor.

  • Ogogor continued her stifling play, but the Eagles stayed closely behind, 17-16.

    • A service ace by the visitors then tied the second set.

  • In a matter of minutes, Suess completely took over for Wake Forest, tallying four kills during a 7-2 surge.

  • Sitting at set point once again, Suess only needed one more look to cap off the period, doing so in a déjà vu-like fashion to the final play of the first set.

    • Wake Forest finished victorious in set two, 25-20.

  • Crawford kept her pace steady right into the third frame, knotting kills in a back-to-back fashion.

  • Franke went up for a solo block, Lauren Strain swung home an attack, and Wake Forest led 8-5.

  • Using a 4-0 boost, Boston College took its first lead of the set, 11-9.

    • The Deacs regrouped in a timeout as a result.

  • The Eagles tied set four at 14-14 on a kill down the middle.

  • Suess erupted on a personal tear, throwing down a handful of kills to put Wake Forest ahead, 18-16.

  • Traded blows refused to die down, as Boston College trailed 21-20.

    • Strain put a soft touch on a floating kill, and the Eagles committed a costly attacking error from the left side on their next possession.

  • Another Suess kill, her final one of the afternoon, put Wake Forest at set point.
