Wake Forest, Ohio State Meet in NCAA Tournament First Round Matchup at Spry Stadium

The Demon Deacons will begin NCAA Tournament play with a Thursday night clash against the Buckeyes.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Competing in its 12th-straight NCAA Men's Soccer Championship, Wake Forest will host Ohio State in first round action on Thursday at Spry Stadium. 

Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.

This will mark the sixth all-time meeting between the Demon Deacons and Buckeyes with the most recent matchup coming on Dec. 16, 2007, when Wake Forest defeated Ohio State 2-1 for the program's first National Championship.

Tickets on the Walt Chyzowych Alumni Hill are $5 and children two years old and under are free if they are sitting in their parent's lap.

The Matchup 

  • Wake Forest earned its 12th-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, as the Demon Deacons enter Thursday's contest with a 14-5-0 overall record. 

  • The 12-straight appearances is the longest streak in the ACC and eight more years than any other conference member. 

  • Ohio State, meanwhile, is making its first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2015 season. The Buckeyes will enter the matchup sporting a 10-3-5 overall record. 

  • Wake Forest finished the regular season with a 5-3-0 record in ACC action and advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament. 

  • Ohio State finished tied for second place in the Big Ten during the regular season with a 4-2-2 conference record before advancing to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament. 

  • The Demon Deacons are making its 26th appearance in the NCAA Tournament while the Buckeyes are making their 11th showing. 

Last Time Out

  • Wake Forest fell in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament by a final score of 2-0 to Clemson last Wednesday at Spry Stadium. 

  • The Demon Deacons had advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament after knocking off Virginia Tech 1-0 in the quarterfinals. 

  • Wake Forest was unable to mount enough on the attacking end to match the Tigers' two goals, with the first coming in the 14th minute. 

  • Sophomore goalkeeper Trace Alphin collected five saves on the night and was one of four Demon Deacons to go the full 90 minutes.

  • Senior Takuma Suzuki and junior Prince Amponsah were named to the ACC All-Tournament Team.  

Scouting The Buckeyes

  • The Buckeyes have earned a double-digit win total this year for the first time since 2015, when Ohio State was the ninth-seed and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. 

  • Ohio State has been guided this season by two Big Ten award winners in Goalkeeper of the Year Keagan McLaughin and Midfielder of the Year Laurence Wootton. 

  • McLaughin appeared in 14 matches to collect 44 saves with just 14 goals surrendered, as Ohio State earned five clean sheets when he was in goal.

  • Wootton, meanwhile, leads Ohio State in goals (five) and shots on goal (22) and is tied for the team lead in points (12) and game-winning goals (two).    

Looking Ahead

  • If Wake Forest is able to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the Demon Deacons will face No. 12 seeded UNC Greensboro on Sunday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
