Appleby Explodes for Season-High, Deacs Take Road Win at Wisconsin

11/30/2022 12:19:00 AM | Men's Basketball

Wake Forest remains undefeated all-time against the Badgers.

MADISON, Wis. - Looking to make a statement in its first true road test of the 2022-23 season, Wake Forest men's basketball brought grit to the floor on Tuesday night (Nov. 29), finishing victorious in a 78-75 victory over Wisconsin (5-2) in the 2022 ACC-BIG Ten Challenge.

The Demon Deacons (7-1) now sit at a 14-6 record in the annual ACC-Big 10 Challenge, including an 8-2 mark at home. The team's 14 wins are tied for the second-most in the event's history.

Additionally, Wake Forest is a perfect 4-0 against Wisconsin in the all-time series. The Deacs and Badgers last faced on Nov. 29, 2005, where Wake Forest won in a 91-88 decision. The Deacons are the first team to net 70 or more points in a contest versus Wisconsin this year.

Playing all 40 minutes on Tuesday night, Tyree Appleby went off for a new personal-best scoring performance as a Deac, leading all individuals with 32 points. He is the first Wake Forest individual to score 30 or more points since Alondes Williams' 34 points versus VMI on Dec. 14, 2021. The savvy guard controlled the tempo in a highly efficient manner, going 11-of-16 from the field, including a 4-of-6 mark from three-point land. Appleby added four rebounds and five assists to his line.

Wake Forest also saw clutch moments from Cameron Hildreth and Damari Monsanto, as the two finished with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Hildreth hauled in seven rebounds. The Deacs continued their streak of having at least three players score in double-figures every game this season.

Playing 24 minutes, Matthew Marsh was close to recording a double-double, totaling eight points on 4-of-4 shooting and grabbing a career-high nine rebounds. It was the second game in a row that the sophomore big man had not missed a field goal.

Wake Forest has mounted a 7-1 season start for the second year in a row, having started 10-1 back in 2021-22.

How It Happened

  • Hildreth opened the scoring 20 seconds into the game with a reverse layup.

  • Monsanto continued the efforts with his first three-pointer of the night for a 5-0 lead less than two minutes into the contest

  • Carr kept the Deacs going with a corner three to go up 10-8.

  • A stepback three and fastbreak layup from Appleby continued Wake's scoring and the defense held Wisconsin scoreless for two and a half minutes into the first media timeout

    • The Badgers went 0-for-5 from the field during that span.

  • A Hildreth-to-Marsh slam out of the media timeout maintained the Deacs' lead.

    • Marsh put another one down shortly after, this time from Appleby, to keep the Deacs ahead, going into the under-12 media timeout.

  • After a Deacon scoring drought, Hildreth got a paint finish to fall on a drive for Wake Forest to regain the lead, 24-23, with eight minutes left remaining in the first half.

    • Two free throws from Hildreth extended the advantage, 26-23.

  • The Wake Forest defense held the Badgers scoreless for almost seven minutes and caused five turnovers.

  • A putback slam from Marsh, his third dunk of the night, gave the Deacs the five-point advantage with under a minute left in the half.

  • Wake Forest went into halftime leading Wisconsin, 37-34, after Wisconsin hit a three at the buzzer.

    • Appleby led the Deacs with 12 points and two assists.

    • Marsh pulled down a team-high six boards.

  • Hildreth opened the second-half scoring with a jumper just 12 seconds in, followed by a Marsh layup on the next possession.

  • Keller scored his first points of the contest with a layup at the 17:30 mark.

  • Monsanto put the Deacs back in the scoring column with a jumper to give Wake Forest a 47-44 lead with 12:52 remaining in the contest.

    • After Wisconsin briefly jumped in front again, Appleby earned his way to the line and knocked down a pair of free throws to regain the lead for Wake Forest with 11:03 left in the half.

  • Carr blocked a shot that led to a Williamson corner three to extend the lead to four.

  • Appleby made a driving layup and a corner three on back-to-back possessions out of the media timeout to pull the Deacs to within two with 6:48 to go.

    • The Florida transfer continued to stay hot as he made two more three-pointers on the next two possessions. He scored 11-straight points in just over two-and-a-half minutes of action.

  • Monsanto cut the deficit to one with a three-pointer on a fast break, as three minutes remained in regulation.

  • Appleby converted a three-point play with 2:22 remaining to reach 30 points for the first time this season.

  • Shortly afterward, Monsanto gave Wake Forest the lead with a turnaround jumper with 1:33 left in the contest.

  • Hildreth hit a close-ranged jumper with 27 seconds remaining to give his Deacs a one-point advantage.

  • Appleby remained calm under pressure and knocked down his free throws to bump the lead to three with 12 seconds left.

    • Hildreth did the same a few seconds later to seal out the 78-75 win over the Badgers.

  • The Demon Deacons did not allow a field goal for the final 2:38 in the comeback victory.

Coach's Comments

"What an incredible environment to play in. They have incredible fans and a great team. We got off to a great start and it really helped us. When you go on the road, you have to get off to a great start on offense and we shot it well. We shot it well for pretty much the entire game, but they gave us some problems and made tough shots. We got enough stops at the end of the game to win it. Incredible resiliency by Tyree Appleby, he had a heck of a game. We lost a game like this about a week ago to Loyola Marymount. We didn't foul, then they came down and made a three and sent it to overtime and we lost. We tried to foul this time twice. Actually the second time, I think (Hepburn) thought we were going to foul and he threw it up there. It's a great win for our program. I know this is a really hard place to play. I have an unbelievable amount of respect for this program, for coach Gard and the past. I walk out of here with a lot of pride for Wake Forest winning here tonight." - head coach Steve Forbes
