The Matchup
-
Wake Forest and Virginia Tech will meet for the second time this season after the Hokies knocked off No. 11 Louisville 2-1 on Wednesday night at the Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Family Stadium.
-
The victory snapped a five-match losing streak for Virginia Tech and was the team's first victory over an ACC opponent this season.
-
It also marked the first time a 12 seed in the ACC Tournament had won a match since the conference adopted a new format in 2016.
-
The Demon Deacons, meanwhile, secured a first round bye in the ACC Tournament following a 3-0 victory over Louisville in the regular season finale on Oct. 28.
-
Earning a bid in the last six NCAA Tournaments, Virginia Tech is looking to extend that streak despite finishing the regular season at 2-13-1 overall and 0-8-0 in ACC play.
-
Prior to the victory over Louisville, Virginia Tech's first two wins on the year were against Longwood and ETSU.
-
This will be the 29th all-time meeting between Wake Forest and Virginia Tech, with the Demon Deacons holding a 23-3-2 advantage in the series and a 12-1-1 record against the Hokies in Winston-Salem.
-
Sunday's match will also mark the fourth-ever meeting between the two programs in the ACC Tournament, with Wake Forest going 2-0-1 in those matches. The draw took place in 2019, with the Demon Deacons advancing 6-5 in penalty kicks.
-
The winner of Sunday's match will move on to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament, set to be played on Wednesday with the matches taking place at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on the ACC Network.
Last Time Out
-
Needing a victory to secure the No. 4 seed in the ACC Tournament and a first round bye, the Demon Deacons scored a 3-0 victory over then-No. 9 Louisville last Friday.
-
After being tied 0-0 at halftime, the Wake Forest victory was fueled by second half goals from sophomores Babacar Niang, Roald Mitchell and Leo Guarino.
-
The goal for Mitchell was a team-best seventh this season and his first since Sept. 13. Also recording an assist on Niang's game-winner, Mitchell has a program-high 18 points this season.
-
On the defensive end, Wake Forest held Louisville without a goal for the first time in the regular season for the Cardinals. The Deacs allowed just two shots on goal, both of which were saved by sophomore Trace Alphin.
-
For his efforts on both sides of the pitch, senior Takuma Suzuki was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
-
The Peachtree City, Ga., native also recorded an assist on Guarino's goal.
Scouting The Hokies
-
Offensively, Virginia Tech has been led in scoring this season by Danny Flores' four goals. After missing the final four matches of the regular season, Flores returned to the pitch against Louisville and played 27 minutes.
-
In his debut season, Mesei Yoshizawa has contributed a team-best four assists along with two goals of his own. Two of those four assists came in the Hokies' upset victory over Louisville.
-
Starting 15 of 17 matches in goal for Virginia Tech, Ben Martino has recorded the second-most saves in the ACC this season with 54.
Deacs In The ACC Tournament
-
Wake Forest will be in search of its fourth ACC Tournament title and the third under head coach Bobby Muuss as the Deacs begin postseason play on Sunday.
-
The Demon Deacons are 22-27-13 all-time in ACC Tournament play and 8-5-2 under Muuss.
-
Wake Forest claimed its first ACC Tournament in 1989, defeating Duke 5-3 in penalty kicks. In 2016, the Deacs defeated Clemson in the final for the program's second ACC Championship before repeating the next season over Virginia.
-
The Deacs have made 18 ACC Tournament appearances in Winston-Salem and sport a 9-7-2 record in those matches.
Looking Ahead
-
If Wake Forest is able to advance to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament, the Deacs will play the winner of Duke vs. Clemson Wednesday night at either 5 p.m. or 7 p.m.
-
Wake Forest would travel to Durham in the event Duke advances and would remain at Spry should Clemson advance.
