Wake Forest Welcomes All for Holiday Hoops at the Joel

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's basketball team will face in-state foe Appalachian State for the first time since 2006 inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Wednesday night (Dec. 14).
The Demon Deacons (7-3, 0-1) are coming off a 72-70 loss against the LSU Tigers in the 2022 Holiday Hoopsgiving event in State Farm Arena in Atlanta last Saturday (Dec. 10).
Tyree Appleby again anchored the Demon Deacons' offense against LSU, pouring in a team-high 26 points while adding six assists in 37 minutes of action. It was the graduate guard's fifth performance of 20 or more points this season. Appleby finished on a remarkable 11-of-13 shooting from the floor.
As of Dec. 13, Appleby currently leads the conference in points per game (19.1). He also stands second among all league individuals in assists per game (5.50).
Matthew Marsh gave a major spark as a reserve against the Tigers, going for his first career double-double – 13 points and 11 rebounds. His total mark in boards was a new career high. Additionally, the sophomore big man was perfect from the floor (6-of-6 shooting).
This season is just the second since 2013-14 that Wake Forest has had three players record double-doubles (four players did so last season). Andrew Carr had 14 boards and 15 points against Utah Valley. Bobi Klintman became the first Wake freshman to record a double-double since 2017, tallying 15 points and 10 boards against South Carolina State along with Marsh's double-double on Saturday.
As a team, Wake Forest shot over 53 percent from the field during the first half on Saturday, while holding LSU to just a 39.4 percent mark. The Deacs ultimately finished with a 50.9 percent clip in comparison to the Tigers' 43.8.
The Deacs' team field goal percentage of 47.2 is the fourth-best in the ACC this season. They also have the fourth-highest scoring offense in the league.
The Mountaineers, led by fourth-year head coach Dustin Kerns, and 6-4 this season and have not begun conference play in the Sun Belt yet. The team is coming off a 103-43 win against Division III Carlow University last week at home.
Senior forward Donovan Gregory leads the team in scoring, averaging 12.6 points per game. App State has two other players averaging double figures, sophomore Terence Harcum (10.3 ppg) and graduate student Tyree Boykin (10.9 ppg). Freshman forward Justin Abson is pulling down a team-best 5.7 rebounds per game.
Wednesday night's tipoff inside The Joel is scheduled for 7:00 p.m ET. The game will air live on ACC Network.
There will be Santa hats given away to the first 750 fans and a Mini Deacs dance performance at halftime.
Wake Forest is also glad to partner with the Second Harvest Food Bank for a Canned Food Drive on the 14th. All fans are encouraged to bring canned goods and other nonperishables to donate to Second Harvest.
