Demon Deacons Head North for Final Non-Conference Game of the Season

12/16/2022 12:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's basketball team will face its second BIG Ten opponent of the season on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 17) when the Demon Deacons face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights inside Jersey Mike's Arena. Wake Forest already defeated BIG Ten foe Wisconsin in November as part of the ACC/BIG Ten Challenge.

The Deacs (8-3, 0-1) are coming off a 67-66 buzzer-beating win over the Appalachian State Mountaineers (6-5) earlier this week on Wednesday night (Dec. 14) inside LJVM Coliseum. Andrew Carr provided in the clutch for his group, sinking in a turnaround jumper as time expired on the clock to win the game in regulation.

Wake Forest remains undefeated at home this winter, moving to a 6-0 clip. This is the first time Wake has had back-to-back 6-0 home starts since 2007-08 and 2008-09, when they went 12-0 and 8-0, respectively, inside LJVM.

Carr finished with a season-high 20 points on the night. The junior forward also made 8-of-14 attempts on field goals and grabbed five rebounds.

Tyree Appleby posted a two-way performance of 15 points, four assists, and three steals. The Arkansas native has recorded scoring double-figures in nine of the team's 11 games this season.

As of Dec. 15, Appleby leads the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in scoring (18.7 ppg) and is just .14 assists behind the leader, as he's averaging 5.36 dimes per game. Appleby has the seventh-best field goal percentage, shooting 51.6 percent from the field. He also holds the third-best free throw percentage in the league (average of 2.5 FTM/G), as the graduate guard is shooting 87.1 percent from the line.

As one of the best rebounding teams in the ACC, the Deacs average 27.55 defensive boards per game with a defensive rebounding percentage of 75.4.

Rutgers, led by seventh-year head coach Steve Pikiell, are 6-4 this season and have yet to begin conference play in the BIG Ten. The team is coming off a 45-43 loss to Seton Hall at home.

The Scarlet Knights are led by junior Clifford Omoruyi and senior Cam Spencer. Both are averaging double figures in scoring (14.4 and 12.5) and have started every game this season. Omoruyi is nearly averaging a double-double, pulling down 9.5 boards per game along with his 14.4 points.

Saturday afternoon's tipoff inside Jersey Mike's Arena is scheduled for 12:00 p.m ET. The game will air live on BIG Ten Network.

Fans can follow along via the Demon Deacons' Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts (@WakeMBB).
