Wake Forest Captures Decisive Win Over Georgetown on Saturday

2/19/2022 10:03:00 PM | Baseball

The Demon Deacon offense recorded 12 hits and their pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts on the mound in an eight-run victory.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --  Behind a balanced offensive attack and five strikeouts and just one walk in five innings of work from freshman lefthander Josh Hartle in his collegiate debut, Wake Forest defeated Georgetown, 8-1, on Saturday night in the second game of opening weekend.

The Demon Deacons (2-0) spread out their scoring throughout the game with three runs in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth and one in the eighth. Overall, the Wake Forest offense hammered the Hoyas' (0-2) pitching with 12 hits, four doubles and 13 walks.

Defensively, Wake Forest was nails on defense as the Deacs did not commit an error.

Along with Hartle, who earned the win, in the Wake Forest bullpen, lefty Derek Crum, Will Andrews, and Cam Minacci combined for 12 strikeouts and walked just one Hoya to help lead the Deacs to their second-straight win.

Individually at the plate, Wake Forest was led by sophomore Jake Reinisch as he tallied two hits, three RBI and a pair walks. Additionally, Brock Wilken, Adam Cecere and Brendan Tinsman all recorded a pair of hits to help pace the Deacs' offense.

Wake Forest returns to action on Sunday at Couch Ballpark for a 4 p.m. first pitch against VCU.

How It Happened
  • Despite a pair of singles allowed and 30 pitches thrown, rookie lefthander Josh Hartle did not allow a run in his first collegiate inning in the top of the first.
  • After the Deacs were set down in order in the bottom half of the opening frame, Hartle settled in with a 1-2-3 second inning.
  • Wake Forest's offense picked up where it left off on Friday night as the Deacs got on the board first with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the second inning.
    • After singles by Adam Cecere and Brendan Tinsman, freshman Nick Kurtz drove in the first run of the game with an RBI double down the left field line.
    • Sophomore Jake Reinisch plated Tinsman with a single to left and then a balk by the Georgetown starting pitcher secured the Deacs third run of the contest.
  • The Deacs added a tally to their lead in the third when Reinisch tallied two more RBI on a two-out single.
  • As Harltle continued to cruise through four scoreless innings, Wake Forest made the game 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double after a walk and a Michael Turconi single set the table for the preseason All-American.
    • The Deacs continued to add to their lead in the home half of the fourth with a Cecere RBI single and a Danny Corona sacrifice fly.
  • Hartle allowed his lone run of the contest in his final inning of work in the top of the fifth as Georgetown recorded a trio of singles in the frame.
  • After Derek Crum retired all five batters he faced in the top of the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, redshirt freshman Will Andrews replaced him with two outs in the top of the seventh and Wake Forest ahead, 8-1.
    • The Winston-Salem native closed out the frame with a strikeout.
  • Sophomore Camden Minacci pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings for the Deacons, which included five strikeouts.
    • Wake Forest scored the game's final run in the bottom of the eighth when Turconi recorded an RBI single.
Words from Walter
"We got a great start from Josh Hartle tonight. He had the 30-pitch first inning and found a way to bounce back and ended the night with around 75 pitches through five innings. Offensively, Reinisch stepped up big for us and helped us create some big innings. Tonight wasn't a great offensive effort, but I think it was a solid offensive effort. Going into tomorrow, we have our bullpen rested and where we want it. VCU is a good team with a lot of talent but I like where we are heading into tomorrow's game."
