
Demon Deacons Move Into 'Blue Gray Classic' Semifinals

Women’s tennis got past round one in Montgomery on Friday night.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - With a weather delay pushing match play into the evening, No. 18 Wake Forest women's tennis nevertheless brought exceptional energy into day one of the 74th Annual Blue Gray National Tennis Classic on Friday (Feb. 25).
Wake Forest swept Troy University (4-3) in a quick stretch of singles for a quarterfinal victory before stepping into the next round versus No. 24 Texas Tech. The latter went ahead 1-0 after notching a win in doubles.
The classic's semifinal portion continues on Saturday morning (Feb. 26), as the Demon Deacons and Red Raiders will begin singles play at 10:30 a.m. ET.
How it Happened

Wake Forest and Troy jumped right into singles competition once the match unfolded, as doubles did not take place due to the delay.

Samantha Martinelli and No. 44 Carolyn Campana went first in winning their opening sets, as three Deacs each captured a 6-0 sweep.

Martinelli and Brooke Killingsworth stayed dominant in refusing to give up a game, earning the first two singles wins of the night.

No. 84 Casie Wooten was right behind her teammates, taking a two-set win of her own to increase Wake Forest's advantage to 3-0.

Carolyn would put the finishing touches on the first contest, totaling a 6-4 decision in her second set to hand the Deacs the sweep.

Anna Campana (6-3, 2-0) and Anna Brylin (6-0, 5-2) went unfinished in their respective matches.

Shortly afterward, Wake Forest matched up with Texas Tech in a nationally-ranked showdown for doubles.

The Red Raiders went into the margin first with a 6-1 win in second doubles.

The two remaining courts each featured tight play throughout, before No. 6 Brylin/Killingsworth hung on for a 6-4 finish to even things.

Ultimately, Texas Tech took the doubles point on a 7-5 clip in third doubles.
