No. 20 Deacs Sit Inside Top Four at Wake Forest Invitational

3/7/2022 7:12:00 PM | Men's Golf

After 36 holes in the opening day of play at historic Pinehurst No. 2, the Demon Deacons have five players inside the top 25 on the individual leaderboard.

PINEHURST, N.C. -- Battling strong winds for the majority of the opening day of competition at the Wake Forest Invitational at Pinehurst No. 2, the No. 20 Wake Forest men's golf team sits inside the top four on the leaderboard.

The Demon Deacons nearly had their entire starting five sitting inside of the top 25 with sophomore Michael Brennan as the top player on the individual leaderboard. The Deacs head into the final round just two strokes back of second place at 593 (+33).

Brennan, who is looking to defend his individual title this week in Pinehurst No. 2, sat inside of the top 10 for the entire day and was as high as having the overall lead at one point. He got his day off to a quick start as he was 2-under in the first three holes of the first round.

He ended each round with a 73 (+3) and is tied for ninth with one round left to play on Tuesday morning.

A pair of freshmen had impressive showings behind Brennan. Scotty Kennon is tied for 15th at 8-over-par through 36 holes while Collin Adams, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 22nd on the leaderboard.

Junior Mark Power and senior Parker Gillam are the final Demon Deacons inside of the top 25 as Power is tied for 19th at 9-over while Gillam sits in a tie for 22nd at 10-over.

The Demon Deacons will tee off their final round on Tuesday starting at 8:00 a.m., as Wake Forest A will play alongside host San Francisco and Kentucky off hole No. 1 while Wake Forest B will be paired with Augusta and Yale off No. 10.

From Coach Haas:

"It was very windy out there today and the course won. If we putt better tomorrow, we will move up the leaderboard." - Head Coach Jerry Haas
