The Demon Deacons shaved seven strokes off their second round score to finish inside of the top three.
PINEHURST, N.C. -- The No. 20 Wake Forest men's golf team moved up on the final day of the Wake Forest Invitational at Pinehurst No. 2 Tuesday.
In the third round, the Demon Deacons were led by a trio of 72 (+2) rounds from senior Parker Gillam, sophomore Michael Brennan and freshman Scotty Kennon as the Deacs trimmed seven strokes off their second-round score. All three players ended the tournament inside of the top 20. Wake Forest as a team finished third with a final score of 882 (+42).
Brennan claimed top honors for the team, tying for ninth on the individual leaderboard at 8-over-par. He was playing his best golf at the end of the tournament, shooting a bogey-free 2-under-par over the final 16 holes of his round.
This marks the eighth time in 16 career collegiate events Brennan has placed inside of the top 10.
Kennon claimed his second top-15 finish of his freshman campaign, tying for 13th on the individual leaderboard. His 73 (+2) on Tuesday helped him move up two spots.
Gillam as well as junior Mark Power tied for 20th on the individual leaderboard at 12-over-par for the tournament.
The low Wake Forest round of the day and the tournament came from freshman Marshall Meisel. Helped by a 68 (-2), Meisel moved up 21 spots on the individual leaderboard to tie for 17th. He has now finished inside of the top 25 in four of five events during his rookie campaign.
From Coach Haas:
"Coach Aaron O'Callaghan and I saw some encouraging signs towards the end of the event. Each and every time you play this game you learn something more about yourself and how you can improve and that is exactly what will do. We will work on it and be a better team because of this experience. Pinehurst No. 2 was great and once again they did a great job running the event. We are looking forward to next year and a fantastic field. It's all about peaking at the right time and we will be ready.
Congrats to Coach Forbes and Alondes Williams for winning Coach of the Year and Player of the Year in the ACC. Go Deacs!" - Head Coach Jerry Haas
