Deacs Run Through Syracuse, Advance to ACC Championships’ Quarterfinal Round

Anna Campana came in the clutch for the Deacs on Friday evening.

ROME, GA – Stepping into its first test of the postseason, No. 7-seeded Wake Forest women's tennis wasted zero time in initiating a stellar start in the second round of the 2022 ACC Tennis Championships, defeating No. 10-seeded Syracuse (10-11) in a 4-1 finish on Thursday evening (April 21).

Wake Forest will move on to play No. 2-seeded Duke in the quarterfinals on Friday (April 22) at 6 p.m.

The win over the Orange, which stands at No. 59 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings, was the Demon Deacons' (16-9) sixth team win over a ranked opponent this season.

Additionally, Wake Forest mirrored a feat from last spring when the team took down Syracuse in its first matchup of the 2021 ACC Championships.

The Deacs have now advanced past their first match of the ACC Championships in each of the last six seasons.

Junior Anna Campana, who delivered the clinch for her Deacons, is now on a four-match winning streak in singles play.

No. 7 Anna Brylin/Brooke Killingsworth and No. 34 Samantha Martinelli/Casie Wooten grabbed their fifth and fourth ranked doubles wins, respectively.

How it Happened

  • The duo of Samantha Martinelli and Casie Wooten approached their doubles matchup with high confidence, quickly leading 3-0.

  • Martinelli and Wooten could not be stopped, eventually tallying a 6-0 sweep for the evening's first completed match.

  • Brylin and Killingsworth only let up one total game, winning their final four, en route to a 6-1 win and clinching the doubles point.

    • It was the fourth-straight win for the pair.

  • Carolyn Campana and Mia Ahmad's doubles match was abandoned, trailing 3-1 at the time.

  • The bottom half of the Deacs' lineup started well in singles.

    • Martinelli was the first player to win a set (6-4).

    • Brylin and Wooten soon followed, each in a 6-3 clip.

  • Wooten swept her second set, again being the first Deac to finish victoriously for the third consecutive match.

  • Brylin smoothly kept control in fourth singles, completing things in straight-sets and upping the Deacon lead to 3-0.

  • Martinelli went into a third set after narrowly dropping a tiebreaker in the second.

  • Syracuse plugged in a team point in sixth singles.

  • Enduring several long rallies in a late stretch, Anna Campana stayed aggressive to put an end in two frames, giving Wake Forest the win.

  • Carolyn Campana and Martinelli's matches went unfinished.

  • Wake Forest downed Syracuse, 4-1.

From the Head Honcho

"It was a good first match at the ACC's," said head coach Jeff Wyshner. "Our doubles pairs did a great job in setting the tone. While Syracuse was much healthier and consistently better than when we saw them a month ago, we played well in singles too. Our group is looking forward to the next match - we just have to take them one at a time around this time of the year."
