Former Deacon Standout at Point Guard announced as part of 2020 Class two years ago
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Former All-ACC point guard Muggsy Bogues will be inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame on April 22 at the Raleigh Convention Center, the Hall of Fame announced earlier this year.
Bogues, a standout point guard for the Demon Deacons from 1984-87 and current program leader in career assists (781) and steals (275), was originally announced as a member of the Class of 2020 for the Hall, but scheduling conflicts pushed his induction back until this year, where Bogues will join 10 other inductees into the Hall.
The 5-foot-3 Bogues won the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Trophy, given annually to the best men's collegiate basketball player under six feet tall, during his senior year in 1987. His No. 14 jersey is one of 11 numbers that have been retired by the men's basketball program.
A key contributor to Wake Forest's 1984 Elite Eight run, Bogues recorded 200-plus assists in his final three seasons in the Old Gold and Black, leading the ACC in both assists and steals his sophomore and junior seasons. Chris Paul is the only other Demon Deacon to record a 200-assist season. Bogues' 17 assists vs. North Carolina on Feb. 8, 1986, still holds the record for most assists in a game in ACC history.
Bogues was drafted No. 12 overall in the 1987 NBA draft by the Washington Bullets. He spent the vast majority of his 14-year NBA career with the Charlotte Hornets, where he made history as the shortest NBA player in the Association's history. Bogues is ranked 23rd in NBA history with 6,726 career assists and 20th in assists per game (7.6).
A Class of 2001 inductee into the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame, Bogues is the fifth former Wake Forest men's basketball player to be inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, joining Dickie Hemric, Jack Murdock, Billy Packer and Rodney Rogers. Former men's basketball coaches Bones McKinney and Dave Odom have previously been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Joining Bogues in the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2021 are Debbie Antonelli, Mack Brown, Dennis Craddock, Dr. Charles Kernodle, Mac Morris, Trot Nixon, Julius Peppers, Bobby Purcell, Judy Rose, Tim Stevens and Donnell Woolford.
The North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1963. A permanent exhibit, the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame is located on the third floor of the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh and features significant objects and memorabilia donated by inductees. The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
To be eligible for induction into the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame a candidate must be a native of the state or have maintained residence in the state for at least 10 consecutive years.
