Deacs Fall to Duke in Sunday Heartbreaker

Carolyn Campana was one of Wake Forest’s major standouts during the afternoon.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Back for another home appearance, Wake Forest women's tennis (12-8, 4-5) took part in an absolute dogfight against Duke University (13-3, 8-2) on Sunday (April 3). The Demon Deacons ultimately fell just short of a team victory, 4-3.

The contest was headlined by the final day of the university's 'Weekend of Excellence,' celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Women in Athletics. Spectators had the opportunity to enjoy tailgate festivities before cheering on the Deacs.

No. 48 Carolyn Campana grabbed her fourth ranked singles win of the year, defeating No. 20 Georgia Drummy in an impressive, come-from-behind victory.

Samantha Martinelli once again had a standout individual day, only letting up two games within a two-set solo victory. It was her 12th of the spring and fourth consecutive, personal win.

Brooke Killingsworth has now won eight of her last nine matches in singles.

How it Happened

  • No. 8 Anna Brylin/Brooke Killingsworth found themselves in a ranked doubles matchup, taking a 2-1 lead early over No. 80 Georgia Drummy/Karolina Berankova.

  • Brylin and Killingsworth kept their court competitive, as the scoreboard became even at 4-4.

  • Duke picked up momentum for wins in duo play, taking a 1-0 lead.

  • Samantha Martinelli and Killingsworth had the best starts for the Deacs once singles opened, taking 3-0 and 3-1 gains, respectively.

    • The two went on to become Wake Forest's first players to collect opening-set victories, each tacking a 6-1 decision.

  • Martinelli shined throughout her rallies, winning the first three games of set two.

  • Killingsworth also continued to have the upper hand on court five (6-1, 3-1).

  • Martinelli ended her match in a dominant fashion, notching the first singles win for Wake Forest and tying the match at 1-1.

  • Killingsworth maintained control all throughout her own match, getting the deed done in a pair of sets and placing the Deacons ahead, 2-1.

  • A win in second singles by the Blue Devils led to another tied score, 2-2.

  • After dropping her first set, Carolyn Campana stayed alive in the second (7-5) to surge into a third period.

  • Brylin mounted an eye-popping comeback in her second set, forcing a third frame of her own.

  • Duke won in sixth singles.

  • Carolyn Campana erupted through her final minutes of play, downing Drummy to keep Wake Forest in it, 3-3.

  • All eyes were pointed to court five, with Brylin battling in a third set.

From the Head Honcho

"I was very proud of how we competed today," said head coach Jeff Wyshner. "We didn't play a good enough doubles point, and we could have let that carry over to a less than great effort in singles, but we didn't. I've got to believe that, if we keep playing with the heart this team plays with, some of these close matches will start to go our way."

Up Next

Wake Forest jumps back on the road next week, taking out-of-state trips to Virginia (April 8) and Virginia Tech (April 10).
