All five Wake Forest men’s golfers shot under-par rounds during the first day or NCAA Regionals in New Haven Conn.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- After 18 holes of play at the NCAA New Haven Regional, the Wake Forest men's golf team leads with an opening round score of 13-under-par Monday.
All five of the Demon Deacons shot under-par rounds and all sit inside of the top 15 on the individual leaderboard with all four of the counting scores in the top 10. Additionally, the Demon Deacons combined to record just six bogeys in the round and no double bogies or higher.
Senior Alex Fitzpatrick led the way for the Deacs in the opening round, overcoming a bogey on No. 4 to turn in one of the best rounds in the field. After a birdie on the par-4 No. 8 hole, he hit the turn at even par.
There the run of birdies started for the Sheffield, England native. Fitzpatrick birdied the par-4 11th and then found another on No. 12 and again on No. 13, hitting it in from 60-feet out to move to 3-under-par for his round.
Fitzpatrick capped off his day with a birdie on the par-5 16th, one of four Demon Deacons to post a birdie on the hole. Going into the second round, he is tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard and just two strokes off the lead.
Three other Demon Deacons sit one stroke back of Fitzpatrick as sophomore Michael Brennan, senior Parker Gillam and sophomore Mark Power all ended the first round at 3-under-par and tied for ninth. Gillam was the only Deac to finish boogey free with three birdies and 15 pars to his name.
Freshman Scotty Kennon also turned in an impressive 68 (-2) and is tied for 15th on the individual leaderboard.
For the second round, the Demon Deacons will tee off Tuesday with North Florida (-13) and Georgia Southern (-10), with the first tee time set for 8:30 a.m. off No. 1.
From Coach Haas
"I am happy with the way everyone played today. It shows how well the entire team is doing when you don't count a 2-under-Pat score. We avoided having bad holes all day with only six bogeys total as a team. We are excited to get back to the course tomorrow and tee it up again at 7:30 am. There is still a long way to go and we have to continue making birdies."
