The Wake Forest men’s golf team leads by a stroke and is 16 strokes above the cutline with one round remaining in New Haven, Conn.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- After two rounds of play at the NCAA New Haven Regional, the Wake Forest men's golf team holds a one-shot lead with 18 holes remaining in the competition.
All four of the Demon Deacon counting scores shot under-par rounds and all four sit inside of the top 15 on the individual leaderboard. The Deacs potentially have a program regional record in their sights on Wednesday. Through two rounds, Wake Forest is 21-under-par, just four strokes off the record set by the 2007 team that shot 25-under-par at the NCAA West Regional.
If the Demon Deacons were to advance it would be the 47th time in program history they would play in the NCAA Championships, an ACC record and came into this postseason as the 11th highest total in the NCAA.
The Deacs were again led by senior Alex Fitzpatrick, who only had one blemish on his scorecard Tuesday. The Sheffield, England native carded a 67 (-3) with birdies on two of the first four holes getting his day off to a quick start. He also closed his round strong with birdies on No. 16 and No. 17, nearly birding No. 18 to close out the day.
Fitzpatrick heads into the final day tied for third at 7-under-par for the tournament and just three strokes off the individual lead.
For the second consecutive day, sophomore Michael Brennan turned in a score of 67 (-3) and is 6-under-par for the tournament and alone in fifth place on the individual leaderboard.
Junior Mark Power is just one stroke back of Brennan for the tournament and tied for sixth on the leaderboard. He turned in his second under-par round of the tournament with a 69 (-1) Tuesday.
Freshman Scotty Kennon was also under-par for the second consecutive round, posting a 69 (-1) and he is tied for 11th on the individual leaderboard with a 36-hole score of 3-under-par.
For the final round, the Demon Deacons will tee off Wednesday with North Carolina (-20) and North Florida (-12), with the first tee time set for 7:30 a.m. off No. 1.
From Coach Haas
"It was very tough and windy conditions out on the course today and our guys did a great job handling that and shooting 8-under-par. The course was definitely a little tougher today but they have played well in the first two days. There is still one round to go tomorrow and we are looking to finish strong. Early tee time at 7:30 a.m., so we need to be ready to go." - Head Coach Jerry Haas
