The Wake Forest men’s golf team placed first at the NCAA New Haven Regional to punch its ticket to Scottsdale, Ariz., setting a program record for a NCAA Regional shooting 26-under-par.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- For the 47th time in program history, the Wake Forest men's golf team has qualified for the NCAA Championships, winning the NCAA New Haven Regional by seven strokes Wednesday.
En route to qualifying for the NCAA Championships, the Demon Deacons set a program record for an NCAA Regional, shooting 26-under-par. The previous record of 25-under-par was set in 2007 at the NCAA West Regional.
The Deacs led nearly the entire week, taking a shared lead with Georgia Southern after day one and then grabbed the solo lead in round two.
Senior Alex Fitzpatrick continued his impressive play in regional action after tying for second a year ago at the NCAA Cle Elum Regional. The Sheffield, England native was near the top of the individual leaderboard all week and was the top Demon Deacon on the leaderboard after each round.
Fitzpatrick tied for second again, after sharing part of the lead in the tournament, with the help of a final round 68 (-2).
All four of the counting scores for the Deacs were par or better, the third consecutive day Wake Forest did so this week in New Haven, Conn.
Joining him inside of the top 10 was sophomore Michael Brennan who ended the event in a tie for fourth at seven-under-par while junior Mark Power and freshman Scotty Kennon tied for ninth at 4-under-par.
From Coach Haas
"Our goal from day one was to make Championships and we've done that. So now, we've got a bigger goal. We have played extremely well in the last two tournaments, winning both at the ACC Championship and at NCAA Regionals. Now, we need to continue that momentum in Arizona. We'll get back to Winston, rest and prepare then head out next week. Let's go Deacs!" head coach Jerry Haas
