Four Demon Deacons Receive All-ACC Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Wake Forest baseball's Rhett Lowder, Brendan Tinsman, Nick Kurtz and Tommy Hawke were named to the 2022 All-Atlantic Coast Conference teams, as voted on by the ACC coaches and announced by the league this morning. 

Wake Forest's four honorees are the most since the 2017 season. This marks the first All-ACC postseason accolade for each of the four honorees. 

Lowder, who became the first Demon Deacon to be named the conference's Pitcher of the Year this morning, was named to the First Team, while Brendan Tinsman and Nick Kurtz landed on the third team. 

Kurtz and fellow rookie Tommy Hawke were selected to the All-Freshman team.

This group was instrumental in the 2022 squad tying for the second-most regular season wins in program history as well as the largest year-to-year turnaround, increasing their win total by 19 from last season.

Rhett Lowder

Rhett Lowder (Pitcher of the Year/First Team)

  • Became the first Demon Deacon to be named ACC Pitcher of the Year

  • His 10 wins are tied for an ACC best and ranks second in ERA (2.45), second in innings pitched (88) and third in strikeouts (78). 

    • Sits as the only hurler in the ACC to rank in the top three of each category. 

  • Ranks in the top 10 in WHIP (fifth), walks allowed per nine innings (seventh) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (eighth).  

  • Pitched at least six innings in 10 of his 14 starts this season

  • Hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any appearance

  • Walked one batter or less in nine starts

  • Reached 150 career strikeouts with his first punch out against Louisville

  • Allowed zero earned runs against Lafayette, Boston College and Clemson

  • Conceded zero walks against Duke, Notre Dame, Longwood and NC State

  • Became the first Demon Deacon since 2017 to throw a complete game against NC State

  • Named to the 2022 Collegiate Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher of the Year Watch List

Brendan Tinsman

Brendan Tinsman (Third Team)

  • Sits in second for most home runs in a single season (22)

  • Posted a career year, posting bests in every offensive category

    • Batting Average - .345

    • Hits - 77

    • Doubles - 13

    • HR - 22

    • RBIs - 61

    • Slugging - .700

    • On-Base - .387

    • Runs - 58

  • Ranks fourth in the ACC and eighth in the nation in homers

  • Leads Wake Forest in slugging, hits, home runs, bases and multiple-hit games

  • Currently on a career-high 26-game reached base streak

  • Tied for an ACC-best 12 base runs caught stealing

  • Homered twice at Georgia Tech, while homering in three-straight games twice

  • Named a semifinalist for the Buster Posey Catcher of the Year Award

Nick Kurtz

Nick Kurtz (Third Team/All-Freshman Team)

  • Sits in the top five in Wake Forest history in home runs (tied for fourth), runs (second), walks (second) and RBIs (fifth) by a Demon Deacon freshman 

  • Ranks second on team with 47 walks, .665 slugging percentage, .496 on-base percentage, third with a .357 batting average, fourth with 65 hits and 121 bases 

  • Leads the ACC with a .422 batting average and .548 on-base percentage in conference play

  • Has the second-highest OPS (1.254) and fifth-highest slugging percentage (.706) in conference play 

  • Posted a historic day at the plate in Wake Forest's 27-7 victory, becoming the first Wake Forest batter since 2005 to record six hits in the game. 

  • This is also tied for the second most in program history and is the most by a freshman in school history.

  • Also tallied a career-high six RBIs

  • Launched a career-high two home runs against Liberty and Clemson


Nick Kurtz

Tommy Hawke (All-Freshman Team)

  • Leads Wake Forest in batting average (.375) and on-base percentage (.505). These numbers rank second in the league in on-base  while sitting sixth in average

  • Holds the second-highest batting average (.406) and on-base percentage (.525) in the ACC against conference opponents

  • Leads the Deacs in stolen bases with seven

  • Tallied a career-high four hits against North Carolina and Georgia Tech. 

  • Hit first career home run against Coastal Carolina on March 30. Also went yard at High Point.

  • Tallied two outfield assists in Wake Forest's final home non-conference game of the season against the Panthers

  • Ended regular season on a seven-game hit streak
