Demon Deacons Hit Second Round Surge

5/28/2022 10:40:00 PM | Men's Golf

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The Wake Forest men's golf team capitalized on a second-round surge to jump eight spots on the leaderboard to 19th. The top 15 teams after Sunday's third round will advance to Monday.

The Deacs had the fourth-lowest team score of the day, with a five-over 285. Alex Fitzpatrick led the way for the squad with four birdies on his first six holes to make the turn at four under. He recorded one more before the round was over, along with a scorecard clear of bogeys, to record the lowest individual round score of the championship so far, a five-under 65.

Scotty Kennon continued to build on his team-best from Friday, for the second-best round on Saturday that helped him jump 14 spots on the individual leaderboard. The freshman is now inside the top 20 in the field of 156 players. Two birdies on his first nine helped him make the turn at even par, and three more on his second nine aided in his one-over finish for the day. He is three over for the week so far and tied for 18th.

Mark Power also saw improvement on the second day, shaving five strokes from his first round off his second round to jump 33 spots on the board. Back-to-back birdies on his eighth and ninth holes helped him make the turn at just one over, and two more on the second nine aided his three-over finish for the day.

Sunday's third round will begin at 9:10 a.m. ET. Wake Forest will tee off at 2:42 p.m. ET and be paired with Florida State and Arizona. The top 15 teams at the end of Sunday's round will advance to the final round of stroke play on Monday before match play begins Tuesday.

From Coach Haas
"What a day, we were very close to a great round, but we still had a good one. Now it's very important to keep our heads in the game. We need a solid round tomorrow from all five guys to keep going." - head coach Jerry Haas
