Power Advances to Round of 16 at the 127th Amateur Championship

The rising senior finished third during the stroke play portion and won his Round of 32 match 1UP against Australia’s Jack Buchanan.

LYTHAM ST. ANNES, ENGLAND – Rising senior Wake Forest men's golfer Mark Power has advanced to the Round of 16 in match play at the 127th Amateur Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in England.

After finishing third in stroke play, Power advanced directly to the Round of 32 where he awaited a winner from the first round match. Australian Jack Buchanan advanced past Norwegian Markus Braadlie to take on Power.

The Kilkenny, Ireland native led nearly the entire way and held a 1UP advantage for much of the match against Buchanan. At one point on the back nine, Power was 2UP. He held the lead the rest of the way, winning 1UP to advance to the Round of 16.

After winning his first match of the week, Power is set to take on fellow Irishman Alex Maguire in the next round Thursday. Maguire, who recently just finished his junior season at Florida Atlantic, won his Round of 32 match against France's Martin Couvra, 1UP.

Stroke Play

Power carded the lowest round of the day, firing a 65 (-7) including nine birdies to help rise up to the top of the leaderboard. He finishes the stroke play portion in third and just one stroke off the overall lead.

Of Note at the Amateur Championship

Historic names to win the Amateur Championship include Bobby Jones, Sergio Garcia and José María Olazábal. Additionally, Power could be the second Wake Forest player to win the event as Jay Sigel captured the 1979 Amateur Championship 3&2 in an all Demon Deacon final against Scott Hoch.

A player from Ireland has won the tournament six times in its history with the last coming in 2019.

Providing Power for the Deacs

Power was a key piece to the Demon Deacons postseason success, helping the Demon Deacons capture their 19th conference championship in program history and winning the New Haven NCAA Regional by a program record score of 27-under-par.

He played his best tournament of the season at NCAA Regionals, tying for ninth along at 4-under-par including a round of 67 (-3). Power provided a point in the ACC Championship Semifinal match.

During the regular season, Power notched three top-25 finishes, all coming in the final three events of the regular season. His highest finish of the regular season came at the Wake Forest Invitational at Pinehurst No. 2 where he tied for 20th.
