Freshman left hander Josh Hartle earned his seventh win of the season after allowing one run over seven stellar innings on the mound. The Deacs jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to home runs from Michael Turconi, Brendan Tinsman and Brock Wilken in the first.
COLLEGE PARK, Md.- A strong start from freshman left hander Josh Hartle and early offense propelled the Wake Forest baseball team to a 10-4 victory over LIU at the College Park Regional on Saturday afternoon.Â
The regional win helped the Demon Deacons (41-18-1) move to 45-30Â all time in the NCAA Tournament and claim its 41st victory of the season, the fifth most in program history.Â
Wake Forest jumped out early and never looked back as the second-seeded Deacs blasted three home runs in the first inning to take a 4-0 advantage over the Sharks (37-21).Â
Working with the lead, Hartle shoved, allowing just one hit and two walks to go along with five strikeouts in six-straight scoreless frames to begin his 14th start of the season, the second most by a rookie in program history.Â
In the longest start of his young career, the King, N.C. native became just the sixth Demon Deacon freshman ever to earn seven wins.
Wake Forest tacked on four more runs on five hits in the top of the sixth before responding to two LIU runs with an RBI-double from Lucas Costello and sacrifice fly from Pierce Bennett in the top of the ninth.Â
Tinsman rewrote the Wake Forest record book as the Cape Elizabeth, Maine native tied Billy Masse's 34-year old program record with his 24th home run of the season.Â
Additionally, Wilken's solo shot that capped off the top of the first moved him into sole possession of second on Wake Forest's single season home run list (22).
The top of the Demon Deacon order combined for 11 hits and eight RBIs, led by Tommy Hawke with a team-high four hits. Tinsman and Cecere added three base knocks apiece.Â
Crawford Wade forced a groundout and struck out a pair of LIU batters to end the bottom of the eighth before Jacob Grzebinski recorded the final three outs of the game in the bottom of the ninth, striking out a pair to clinch the win.Â

Words from Walter
"That was a good win. We needed to get through that game without using McGraw, Keener, Mascolo, Golob and Minacci. We were able to do that and Josh Hartle was the reason. Josh gave us seven really strong innings. He had all four pitches working today so I was really pleased with the way Josh threw the baseball. We pieced together the last six outs. Crawford came in when it was still a tight ball game and got us a ground out and two big strikeouts and then Grizz finished it in the ninth.
"Offensively, the top of the order got it done for us today. Tommy Hawke was on base five times. Pierce had a couple hits. Turc had a couple hits. Tinny had three hits, including a homer. Cec had three hits. Our main players got it done today. It was a good day for the Deacs."
