Demon Deacons Improve to 3-0 with Win Over Bulldogs

Sophomore Tyla Ochoa registered her first career goal to secure the win

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest women's soccer team (3-0-0) defeated the Georgia Bulldogs (1-2-0), 1-0, Thursday night at Spry Stadium.

Sophomore Tyla Ochoa collected the only goal of the contest, assisted by Caiya Hanks. Hanks also led the team in shots and shots on goal with three and two, respectively.

Sophomore defender Kristin Johnson played the full 90 minutes for the third game in a row and is now the only Demon Deacon to play in every minute of the season. Zara Chavoshi, Laurel Ansbrow and Tyla Ochoa, who made up the rest of the backline, also played the full 90.

The Deacs close out a four-game homestand on Sunday when they host Auburn at 1 p.m.

How It Happened
  • The Wake Forest backline provided plenty of protection for Kaitlyn Parks in the first half, as the keeper was only called into action once in the first 45 minutes.
  • Graduate midfielder Giovanna Demarco controlled the tempo early in the six position, providing an extra layer of support for the defense while also progressing the ball with ease.
  • Freshman Alex Wood took just three minutes to fire a shot on target. Fellow freshman Caiya Hanks also tested the keeper in the first half.
  • Both teams entered the locker room all square at half, 0-0.
  • Zara Chavoshi, making her first start since returning from the U20 World Cup, made a couple of important last-ditch tackles to keep the clean sheet intact.
  • Tyla Ochoa found the breakthrough in the 77th minute, bagging her first career goal as she got on the end of a Hanks corner.
  • Similar to the first half, Parks was forced into action just once in the second 45 minutes when she forced a shot over the bar with five minutes to go.
  • Wake Forest won the contest, 1-0, and is now 3-0 heading into Sunday's game against Auburn.
Demon Deacon Details of Note

  • Graduate midfielder Giovanna Demarco earned her 56th career start in her fifth season with the Deacs.
  • Redshirt junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parks made her 31st career start and recorded her 15th career shutout.
  • Freshman forward Chidubem Dike made her first appearance in the Black and Gold.

Tony Time with Coach da Luz
"I'm really happy with the overall performance. This is the hardest team we've faced and we handled it well. We absorbed some pressure in the first half, and in the second half, I thought we got the game back and wore them down as the game went along. On the counter attacks, I thought we got a couple of chances here and there, but this is the most challenging team we've played so far. I couldn't be happier with the freshman. They don't seem to be phased by what's going on at all."

Our backline was excellent today. Zara, Laurel and Tyla did exactly what we needed them to. They were aggressive and contained 28, which was the plan. I'm so proud of Tyla for her first career goal and what ended up being the game winner. It was a good night." - head coach Tony da Luz
