The Demon Deacons men’s and women’s programs return 24 student-athletes and welcome 16 newcomers to the squad this fall.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Following one of the best seasons in program history, Wake Forest cross country officially announced its 2022 schedule on Thursday, which features several marquee meets including three in the state of North Carolina.
"We are very excited about our schedule this year," said director of track & field and cross country John Hayes. "The men and women each have schedules that will challenge our student-athletes and prepare us to be at our best at the end of the season. I feel confident that we can get both teams to place well at the ACC Championship and the NCAA Championships. The student-athletes worked extremely hard toward that goal throughout the summer."
The 2022 campaign will commence on Thursday, Sept. 1 when the Demon Deacons host in-state foe UNC Greensboro in an exhibition race. Meanwhile, the fall slate will officially get underway when the men's and women's programs split paths on Sept. 16 and Sept. 17, respectively. The men's team will travel to Raleigh for the Adidas Invitational (Sept. 16), while the women's team travels to Greenville, S.C., for the Furman XC Invitational (Sept. 17).
On Sept. 24, the men will head to Stillwater, Okla., for the Cowboy Jamboree. Six days later, the women will resume action when they travel to Lehigh, Penn., for the Paul Short Invitational (Sept. 30). The two programs both travel to Charlotte for the Royals Challenge on Oct. 7, before heading to Charlottesville, Va., for the Panorama Farms U23 Invite on Oct. 15.
Postseason competition begins on Oct. 28 with the ACC Championship, followed by the NCAA Southeast Regional on Nov. 11. The 2022 season will culminate with the NCAA Championships on Nov. 20.
Historic 2021 Season
The men's program enjoyed a stellar 2021 campaign as the team placed third at the ACC Championship before going on to win the NCAA Southeast Regional for the first time in 28 years and posting a top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships.
Last season, the men's team produced seven All-Region honoree's en route to its best finish since 1992.
The women's 2021 season was highlighted by a first place finish at the Chanticleer Challenge and a second place finish at the Wolfpack Adidas Cross Country Challenge. The women also placed eighth out of 31 Division I teams at the NCAA Southeast Regional.
Hayes at the Helm
Director of track & field and cross country John Hayes has enjoyed a decorated tenure leading the Wake Forest men's and women's cross country teams. Since taking over the program in 2016, Hayes has been tabbed the Southeast Region Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year twice.
Earlier this year, Hayes was named the USATF national team assistant coach for distance at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Santiago de Cali, Colombia.
