No. 24 Wake Forest to Conclude Non-Conference Slate Sunday at Loyola Maryland

The Demon Deacons look to begin ACC play undefeated for the second consecutive season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 24 ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team will conclude its 2022 non-conference slate Sunday when the Demon Deacons travel to face Loyola Maryland at Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore, Md.
 
Kick-off is slated for 2 p.m., and the match will be streamed live on ESPN+.

  • Wake Forest is ranked No. 24 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Rankings.
    • No. 24 is the highest Wake Forest has been ranked since 2019.
  • The Demon Deacons remain undefeated after a stellar defensive performance against Maryland. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parks and the Demon Deacon back line refused to allow a goal, bringing Parks' career shutout total to 18. This season, the Deacs have scored 16 goals, while conceding just one.
    • Wake Forest is one of only 17 teams nationally to concede one goal or less this season.
  • Wake Forest finished 25th in the RPI rankings last season.
 
Last Time Out
  • A second half strike from Giovanna DeMarco proved to be the difference as Wake Forest defeated Maryland, 1-0, Thursday night at Ludwig Field in College Park, Md.
  • The two sides were engaged in a defensive battle for most of the match until Olivia Stowell broke down the left side of the pitch, beating two Maryland midfielders, and fired a shot that ricocheted off the head of a Terrapin defender.
  • Stowell then recovered possession of the ball and touched a pass over to DeMarco who blasted a shot towards the upper right corner of the net for her second tally of the season.
  • Despite relentless attacking pressure from Maryland over the ensuing 25 minutes, Wake Forest held on to earn the 1-0 victory. The Demon Deacons logged their sixth clean sheet of the season while holding Maryland to only five shots. 

Scouting the Greyhounds
  • Loyola Maryland is 3-3-1 this season, including a 2-2-1 mark at home. The Greyhounds earned a 2-0 victory over Howard in their last match. 
  • The Greyhounds are led by Baylee DeSmit who has four goals this season.
  • Goalkeeper Paige Sim currently leads the Patriot League in saves (36) and saves per game (5.14).
 
Series History
  • Wake Forest holds a 4-1 record against Loyola Maryland with its lone loss coming on Sept. 7, 2007.
  • Sunday's contest will be the first time Wake Forest has traveled to Loyola Maryland.
  • The last meeting between the two teams was last season. Parks and her current starting back line earned a clean sheet in a 3-0 victory at Spry Stadium.

Looking Ahead
Wake Forest will conclude its five-game road stretch next Sunday (Sept. 18) when the Demon Deacons travel to face Big Four and ACC foe NC State.
