Hamby and Las Vegas Aces Capture 2022 WNBA Championship

In the last 14 months, Wake Forest alums have captured NBA, WNBA and Super Bowl titles as Hamby joins John Wolford (Las Angeles Rams) and Jeff Teague (Milwaukee Bucks).

LAS VEGAS – Wake Forest women's basketball alum Dearica Hamby and the Las Vegas Aces captured the 2022 WNBA Championship Sunday afternoon, the first league title in franchise history.

Hamby and the Aces defeated the Connecticut Sun in four games after reaching the WNBA Finals for the second time in the last three years.

In the last 14 months, Wake Forest alums have captured NBA, WNBA and Super Bowl titles as Hamby joins John Wolford (Las Angeles Rams) and Jeff Teague (Milwaukee Bucks).

Hamby, who played in the final six games of the playoff run after working herself back from an injury, has been with the franchise for her entire career after being selected with the sixth overall pick in the 2015 WNBA Draft. She 

This was just the third time the franchise has made the Finals. The only other times came two years ago in the WNBA bubble in Bradenton, Fla. and during the 2008 season as the San Antonio Silver Stars, nine seasons before the franchise relocated to Las Vegas.

Over her career, she has been a two-time All-Star in 2021 and 2022 as well as the two-time Sixth Woman of the Year in 2020 and 2021. Hamby has posted career numbers of 9.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 0.9 steals per game, filling up the statsheet in her eight-year career.    

This regular season, she averaged 9.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.1 steals as the Las Vegas Aces tied for the best record in the WNBA.

Historic Career at Wake Forest

The Wake Forest great ended her Demon Deacon career as the program's all-time leading scorer (1,801 points) and rebounder (1,021 rebounds). She earned All-America honorable mention honors from both the WBCA and Associated Press this season. Hamby was also a Wade Trophy Finalist and a WBCA All-Region selection.

In her final two seasons in Winston-Salem, she averaged a double-double while scoring better than 20 points per game.
