Wake Forest Sets New Program Record With 13th-Straight Home Victory, Beats George Mason 6-1

9/20/2022 9:49:00 PM | Men's Soccer

Six different Demon Deacons scored as Wake Forest won its eighth-straight match to start the 2022 season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The No. 1 ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team (8-0-0, 2-0-0 ACC) recorded a 13th-straight home victory on Tuesday night, downing George Mason (2-4-0, 1-0-0 A-10) 6-1 at Spry Stadium.

Dating back to a 4-0 victory over William & Mary on Oct. 5, 2021, the Demon Deacons' 13-match home winning streak sets a new program record for consecutive victories on home soil.

Wake Forest entered the halftime break up 2-1, as sophomore Leo Guarino scored the first goal of the night in the 27th minute before George Mason struck back in the 42nd. Despite the goal from the Patriots, the Deacs entered the halftime break up 2-1, as junior Garrison Tubbs headed home his first goal of the season just 32 seconds before the break.

In the opening minutes of the second half, junior Oscar Sears collected his second goal of the season to push the Wake Forest lead to 3-1 before goals from juniors Chase Oliver (57th minute) and Jahlane Forbes (60th minute) and senior David Wrona (72nd minute) closed out the scoring on the night.

The Demon Deacons will compete in their third ACC match of the season on Saturday night, facing current No. 10 Clemson at Historic Riggs Field in the 52nd all-time meeting between the two sides. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.

Create New History
In the win the program set a new record for consecutive home victories at 13 matches, surpassing the previous mark that was set through the first 12 home matches of the 2018 season.

Over Wake Forest's 13-match home winning streak, the Demon Deacons have outscored their opponents 43-7 while recording seven clean sheets.

During the current streak, the team earned a top-five victory over Virginia Tech on Oct. 16, 2021 before defeating Loyola Maryland 7-0 in the largest Wake Forest victory since Oct. 10, 2017.

In postseason play, the Deacs took down Virginia in the first round of the ACC Tournament before knocking off Mercer in the first round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship, as Wake Forest would go on to secure a seventh-straight Round of 16 appearance.

This season, Wake Forest opened the campaign with a shutout victory over UCF and also extended the program's unbeaten streak against NC State to 21-straight matches with a 2-0 victory on Sept. 10.

How It Happened

  • Sophomore Baba Niang recorded the first shot of the night off a second-minute free kick. It was the first of four shots in the first 10 minutes for the Demon Deacons, as junior Garrison Tubbs got a header off on a 10th-minute corner kick that was corralled by Patriots goalkeeper Jake Langley.

  • Sophomore Leo Guarino would break open the scoring in the 27th minute, as he would take a pass from freshman Samuel Jones to beat Langley.

    • The play began off a corner kick from junior Jahlane Forbes that wasn't fully cleared before Jones headed the ball towards Guarino who finished the effort.

    • The goal was the second of the season and third-career strike for Guarino while Jones – who made his Starting XI debut – tallied his first goal contribution.

  • Junior Hosei Kijima nearly collected a second for the Deacs just 58 seconds after he entered the match, but his 33rd-minute shot hit the crossbar.

  • George Mason would tie the match in the 42nd minute, taking advantage of a miscue by the Deacon backline to make it 1-1.

    • It would be the Patriots' only shot of the night.

  • Despite the Patriots striking back, Wake Forest took back the lead just 32 seconds before halftime as Tubbs headed home a perfectly placed cross from fellow junior Sidney Paris

    • The goal was the second of Tubbs' career while Paris registered his second assist of the season.

    • Freshman Aethan Yohannes also picked up an assist, his second of the season.

  • Wake Forest came out firing in the opening seconds of the second half, as junior Oscar Sears fired off a shot that was saved 28 seconds after play resumed.

  • Sears would, however, put the Deacs up 3-1 in the 51st minute, as he beat Langley following a no-look setup from junior Colin Thomas and Forbes.

    • The goal was the second of the season for Sears while Thomas and Forbes collected their third assists of the year.

  • The Deacs would add their fourth and fifth goals of the night 57th and 60th minutes, as junior Chase Oliver and Forbes would both score for the first time this season respectively.

    • On Oliver's 57th-minute strike, the Kennesaw, Ga., native was set-up by sophomore Roald Mitchell and Sears, who's back heel pass left the junior open to score.

    • Oliver would then set up a run for Forbes in the 60th minute. The assist was Oliver's first of 2022.

  • Wake Forest extended its lead to 6-1 in the 72nd minute, as senior David Wrona tallied the second goal of his senior campaign.

    • Walent and Forbes – who now leads the team with four assists – opened up the opportunity for Wrona.

Demon Deacon Details of Note

  • With the victory, Wake Forest pushed its season record to 8-0-0 for the second time in five seasons, joining the 2018 squad that started 11-0-0.

  • The victory marked the 89th for the Deacs at Spry Stadium over the last eight seasons. Since the start of the 2015 campaign, Wake Forest has won 21 more home matches (Indiana and Clemson, 68) than any other program in the country.

  • Wake Forest remains one of just two teams in the country that are unbeaten and untied on the season, joined by Charlotte (6-0-0).

    • The Demon Deacons have yet to trail through the first 720 minutes of the season.

  • The victory was the 197th of head coach Bobby Muuss' career and his 123rd at the helm for Wake Forest.

  • The Demon Deacons moved to 5-0-0 all-time against the Patriots.

  • Junior Garrison Tubbs earned his 40th career start.

  • Freshman Samuel Jones earned his first career start.

  • Sophomore Ryan Fessler made his 35th career appearance in his second start of the season.

From Coach Muuss
"It wasn't pretty at times, but the game was wide-open, especially in the second half and we took our chances. I think it was a crucial moment in the game when we conceded against the run of play with their first shot. But to get a goal right before halftime, I think put us in a really good situation going in. So we just needed to keep up what we're doing. The game became a little bit more wide open. Guys finished their chances. When we get six different goal scorers in the game, that's always nice. It keeps guys going and keeps guys hungry for training. Different guys stepped up into different roles tonight, so I'm extremely proud of the group " – Bobby Muuss
