Second Half Magic Leads No. 24 Wake Forest Past Maryland, 1-0

9/8/2022 11:52:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Giovanna DeMarco scored in the 65th minute to lead Wake Forest to its sixth victory of the season.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – A second half strike from Giovanna DeMarco proved to be the difference as Wake Forest's No. 24 ranked women's soccer team (6-0-1) defeated Maryland (1-1-4), 1-0, Thursday night at Ludwig Field in College Park, Md.

The two sides were engaged in a defensive battle for most of the match until Olivia Stowell broke down the left side of the pitch, beating two Maryland midfielders, and fired a shot that ricocheted off the head of a Terrapin defender.

Stowell then recovered possession of the ball and touched a pass over to DeMarco who blasted a shot towards the upper right corner of the net for her second tally of the season.

Despite relentless attacking pressure from Maryland over the ensuing 25 minutes, Wake Forest held on to earn the 1-0 victory. The Demon Deacons logged their sixth clean sheet of the season while holding Maryland to only five shots. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parks earned her 18th career shutout in goal for Wake Forest.

The Deacs will continue their road swing Sunday when they travel to face Loyola Maryland. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the match will be streamed on ESPN +.

Tony Time with Coach da Luz
"We turned in another strong performance tonight. Our soccer was great to watch and our passing eventually wore a good Maryland team down. Giovanna [DeMarco] put the finish on a nice sequence to win the game. We earned another shutout, which has become a sense of pride for us. We have to finish the weekend off at Loyola Maryland."
