Demon Deacons Open 2023 Ally ACC Women’s Soccer Tournament at Third-Seeded Clemson

The Deacs are looking to advance to the semifinals for the second time in the past three seasons.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Boasting a four-match unbeaten streak, the Wake Forest women's soccer team will begin its quest to a conference title Sunday when the Demon Deacons travel to face third-seeded and No. 8-ranked Clemson in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Ally ACC Women's Soccer Tournament at Historic Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C.
 
Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. ET, and the match can be streamed on ACC Network.

Deacs vs. Tigers
  • Sixth-seeded Wake Forest enters the match coming off a 2-0 road victory at Miami to secure its spot in the 2023 Ally ACC Women's Soccer Tournament on the final day of regular-season action.
    • The Deacs have not allowed a goal in their last two matches and are currently on a four-match unbeaten run.
  • Third-seeded Clemson just had its eight-match unbeaten stretch broken with a 2-0 road loss to Notre Dame on Thursday.
    • The loss dropped the Tigers out of a first-round bye spot in the 2023 Ally ACC Women's Soccer Tournament.

Historic Regular Season
Wake Forest finished the regular season with just two losses, setting a new program record with the previous mark being set at three in 2011. This season also marked the first time in program history the Deacs were not shut out in a single game. As a team, the Demon Deacons allowed just 14 goals all season, which set a new program record by three goals allowed (2021).
 
College Soccer News Team of the Week
Junior defender Zara Chavoshi was named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week after helping limit Boston College and Louisville to a combined four shots on goal over the two matches last week. Chavoshi also drove a shot into the back of the frame out of a free kick to score the game-winning goal in the win over Louisville.
 
Hanks' Production
After playing limited minutes over the past several matches, sophomore Caiya Hanks returned to the starting lineup against Miami in the regular-season finale. The Kailua-Kona, Hawaii native has tallied six goals this season and leads the Deacs with 16 points. Of note, Hanks was recently ranked 71st in the TopDrawerSoccer Mid-Season Top-100.
 
Shots on Shots
The Demon Deacons have attempted 16.18 shots per game this season, which ranks sixth in the ACC and 43rd nationally. Additionally, the Deacs rank fifth in the ACC in shots on-goal per game with 7.12.
 
Dazzling Defense
Wake Forest currently ranks fifth in the ACC and 56th nationally with a .824 GAA through its 17 matches. The Deacs have posted a shutout in .529 percent of their matches this season, which ranks third in the ACC and 35th in the nation.
 
Last Time Out (Against Miami)
For the second time in three years, Wake Forest clinched a spot in the ACC Tournament following a 2-0 win over the Miami Hurricanes Thursday evening at Cobb Stadium in Coral Gables, Fla.
 
The Demon Deacons finished the ACC season with 16 points, which was enough to secure sixth place in the conference for the final spot in the tournament.
 
Junior defender Laurel Ansbrow put the Deacs in front in the 60th minute as she got her head on the end of a perfectly placed Emily Morris corner. It was the first goal of the season for the captain and the second of her career. Morris recorded her fifth-career assist and second of the season.
 
The Demon Deacons continued to look for a second goal over the next 15 minutes until Morris doubled the advantage in the 76th minute after she redirected a ball from junior forward Emily Murphy into the back of the net. The goal marked the sixth of her career and her second of the season. Junior defender Kristin Johnson and Murphy picked up their sixth and 12th assists of their careers, respectively.
 
Individually, Murphy led the team with three shots, with all three coming on-goal, while Meena and Colton tallied two shots apiece. In goal, junior Payton Cahill improved to 4-0-3 and remained unbeaten in her career.
 
Clemson Breakdown
  • Clemson ranks top three in the ACC and top 20 nationally in goals (44), shutout percentage (.667), goals-against average (.556) and assists (52).
  • Similar to the Deacs, the Tigers have only dropped two games all season – the conference opener to Florida State on Sept. 15 and the last game of the regular season to Notre Dame (Oct. 26).
  • Individually, the Tigers are led by senior Makenna Morris, who has tallied eight goals and six assists for a team-high 22 points across 18 regular-season games.
    • Her 22 points rank seventh in the ACC.
  • Freshman Jenna Tobia has accumulated a team-high eight assists in addition to four goals and sits second on the team with 16 total points.
    • Her eight assists rank fourth in the ACC and 28th in the nation.
  • In goal, senior Halle Mackiewicz has allowed just nine goals this season and has posted a .820 save percentage, which ranks third in the ACC.
 
Series History (Wake Forest vs. Clemson)
  • Wake Forest is 11-16-4 against Clemson all-time, dating back to the first meeting in 1994.
    • On the road, the Deacs have posted a 5-10-2 record against the Tigers.
  • Last season, the Demon Deacons earned a dominant, 4-1 victory at home against the then-No. 14 Tigers.
