The No. 1 Demon Deacons defeated No. 2 Stanford for the team title Wednesday evening.
ATLANTA, Ga. - The Wake Forest women's golf team claimed their third team title of the fall winning 3-2 over No. 2 Stanford. Veteran Rachel Kuehn and freshman Macy Pate secured the Deacs' first two points and junior Carolina Chacarra clinched the match 1UP on the 18th green.
Rachel Kuehn scored the Deacs' first point during the championship, dominating her match from the start. The Asheville native sank a 63-foot putt on the first hole to go one up from the start. An eagle putt on the fourth put her two up and birdies on eight and nine put her four up going into the second nine holes. After winning hole 12, Kuehn went up five with six to play and maintained that lead to win 5&4 on the 14th green.
After falling behind early, sophomore Anne-Sterre den Dunnen tied her match with par on the 12th and went up one with a birdie on the 14th. Stanford tied it on the 18th with a birdie putt to extend the match to extra holes. After three playoff holes, Stanford's Kelly Xu won the match on the 21st hole.
Senior Mimi Rhodes tied her match on the 12th as well after four lead changes in her match. She went into the par-five 18th down one and dropped her match 1UP. Freshman Macy Pate earned the second point for the Deacs after trailing for the majority of her match. Pate made the turn two down and tied up the match on the 11th. A par on 12 gave her the lead and she never looked back. The Winston-Salem native reached the 18 tee box one up and halved the 18th to win the match 1UP.
With the overall match tied 2-2, Carolina Chacarra went into 18 up one after leading her match for the entire round. Stanford's Megha Ganne and Chacarra eached parred 18 to halve the hole and give Wake Forest the winning point.
The Deacs are now undefeated in match play over the past six months, winning all three team matches en route to winning the NCAA Championships, defeating Texas 3-2 for the Stephens Cup title and now this week defeating USC and Stanford for the East Lake Cup title.
Coach's Comments
"It's always wonderful to be victorious. You know, we played against just two really tough competitors, USC and then Stanford, and then to compete with them, to make the matches come down to the last holes. You can't simulate that. So, it's just wonderful, wonderful practice for them. Again, you can't simulate it for postseason play." - head coach Kim Lewellen
