Deacs Fall to BYU in North Shore Showcase Opener

11/19/2023 12:19:00 AM | Women's Basketball

The Demon Deacons will return to action Monday, facing Saint Louis in the final game of the North Shore Showcase.

LAIE, Hawaii – The Wake Forest women's basketball team fell to BYU, 67-44, in the opener of the North Shore Showcase Saturday at the Cannon Activities Center in Laie, Hawaii.

The Demon Deacons (1-3) had another solid defensive outing, forcing 26 turnovers, including 14 in the second half. Of note, the Deacs have now recorded 25 steals over their last two games after tallying 11 Wednesday night against North Carolina A&T. Redshirt sophomore forward Malaya Cowles anchored the Demon Deacons' defense, notching a career-best five steals while seven Deacs in total tallied at least one steal.

The Demon Deacons' 26 forced turnovers in the game are the most since January 22, 2017 against Georgia Tech when the Deacs also forced 26 turnovers in the game.

Additionally, it is the first time since December 18 and 21, 2017 against Charlotte and College of Charleston that Wake Forest has produced 20 or more opponent turnovers in back-to-back games.

It marks the first time since March 16, 2017 (Washington State) that a Power-5 team has forced BYU into 26 or more turnovers.

Offensively, the Deacs were led by freshman forward Madisyn Jordan as the standout rookie tallied a career-high 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field and 3-of-7 from beyond the arc.

Of note, senior forward Aliah McWhorter saw her first action since the 2020-21 season after missing the past two seasons due to injury, posting a positive plus-minus and contributing two points.

Freshman guard Makela Quimby recorded her first collegiate point in the final minutes of the game, connecting on 1-of-2 free throws.

From Gebbia
"I am proud of the effort that we played with today and we didn't give up. We played hard to the very end and that is something to build on. We forced them to turn the ball over and we limited how many times we turned it over on offense. We played together and we had great energy on the bench. The ball just didn't fall for us tonight. We executed pretty well offensively but we needed to make more shots to be able to stay in games. Individually, you can start to see some bright spots. Madisyn has been playing better and better and Kaia has been good for us in all four games this season. If we can continue to have that same energy and fight, we are going to start to see the results come." - Coach Megan Gebbia
