Wake Forest Hosts Georgia Tech in Weekend Matchup

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's basketball team stays home this weekend for a matchup against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday evening (Feb. 11). Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum and the game will air live on ACC Network.
Wake Forest (16-9, 8-6) is coming off its third consecutive home win over the North Carolina Tar Heels Tuesday night at LJVM Coliseum. The Deacs' 22-point lead at the half was the largest deficit for the Tar Heels so far this season. The Tar Heels' 25 halftime points were the least points they've scored in a half this season. The seven-point loss was the second-largest conference loss of the season for North Carolina.
North Carolina came into the game limiting opponents to an average of 68 points per game. Wake Forest scored 92 in the win, including 47 in the first half. Wake Forest's five turnovers was the least total amount they've had in a game during the Steve Forbes era.
Wake Forest is an astounding 29-4 inside Joel Coliseum since the start of the 2021-22 season. The Deacs won 15-straight games inside Joel Coliseum, which was the longest home-win streak since the Deacs went 22-0 during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons. The Deacs' 29-4 home record is the best in the ACC during that time period and is one of the best in the country.
After scoring his 2,000th career point at the 12:45-minute mark in the second half, Tyree Appleby broke program records in free throws made (23) and attempted (28). Additionally, his total makes at the charity stripe set a new Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) record. The Wake Forest record of made free throws was previously held by Dickie Hemric in 1955 at 20 makes, while the ACC record was held by Grady Wallace of South Carolina with 21 makes. The Wake Forest and ACC records of free throw attempts were previously held by Dickie Hemric in 1955 at 26 attempts.
Appleby finished Tuesday evening with 35 points, his highest mark at Wake Forest thus far. He also notched his first double-double of the season with 11 assists, chipping in seven rebounds as well. The graduate guard is also one of just two ACC players to record 30 points, 10 assists and 5 rebounds in a game since 1996.
Damari Monsanto plugged in 16 points and seven rebounds, tying his season high for a third time in the latter. Matthew Marsh was perfect from the floor (5-of-5) to round out the Deacon trio of double-digit scorers, tallying 10 points. Making his fifth start of 2022-23, Davion Bradford totaled eight points and six rebounds in just under 18 minutes.
The Yellow Jackets (9-15, 2-12) are coming off a 70-68 win against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Wednesday night (Feb. 8) in Atlanta. Lance Terry had a game-high 19 points and Ja'von Franklin was one rebound shy of a double-double, with a game-high nine rebounds in addition to his 16 points. Two other starters also finished in double figures for the Jackets, as Kyle Sturdivant had 12 points and Dallan "Deebo" Coleman had 11. Deivon Smith dished out a game-high seven assists in the win as well.

Saturday's halftime will feature a recognition of the latest class of inductees into the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame, a performance by members of the Junior Spirit team and the annual Baby Race sponsored this year by NC 259. Coaches and athletes will also be repping their green in honor of mental health awareness.
