Deacs Split Season Series with Georgia Tech

2/16/2023 9:19:00 PM | Women's Basketball

The Demon Deacons have split the season series with the Yellowjackets for the third time in the last four seasons.

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wake Forest women's basketball team fell at Georgia Tech, 63-55, Thursday night at McCamish Pavilion, splitting the regular-season series with the Yellowjackets for the third time in the last four years.

The Demon Deacons (14-12, 5-10 ACC) are still in search of their first ACC road win of the season after dropping the road contest to the Yellowjackets (13-13, 4-11 ACC). Despite the loss, the Deacs still have a half game lead for 10th place in the ACC standings with the help of other results in the league Thursday night.

Despite trailing by 12 points with 5:06 remaining in the game, the Demon Deacons nearly worked themselves all the way back as a runner from sophomore guard Elise Williams with 49 seconds left in the game brought Wake Forest within four.

Offensively, the Deacs had three players finish in double figures with Williams leading the way, netting 13 points despite playing much of the game in foul trouble. Joining her in double digits were junior forward Demeara Hinds and junior guard Jewel Spear.

Hinds, the Douglasville, Ga. native, posted her third double-figure scoring game of the season, tallying 12 points in the defeat. Spear pitched in 11 points of her own, her seventh-straight game in double digits.

On the defensive end of the floor, Wake Forest had another strong performance defending the three, holding Georgia Tech to just 4-of-16 (25 percent) from long range. The Deacs came into the game ranked 23rd in the nation in that category, the second-straight season a Megan Gebbia coached team is in the top 25 in that category.

There are only two home games remaining at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum this season. Be sure to claim your spot for exciting ACC matchups against Florida State and Boston College at GoDeacs.com/Tickets.

FROM GEBBIA
"We had some uncharacteristic mistakes tonight but I am proud that we kept playing to the final whistle. We really pushed there at the end and cut the deficit down to four points with a minute left to go. We seemed a little out of sync, especially on the defensive end of the floor. We also need to try and do a better job of not fouling especially against the team that leads the conference in free throw percentage. We did some gritty things to keep us in it, grabbing offensive rebounds and working our way to the free throw line. We had some really good moments of offense at the beginning of the game and at the end of the game, but we needed to find a way to score more in the middle half of the game. We just didn't make enough plays to win in a tough road environment." - head coach Megan Gebbia
