Demon Deacons Primed for 2023 ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships

A season ago, the Deacs recorded a combined 12 top-five finishes and 26 top-10 finishes at the annual meet.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C — Following a stellar regular season campaign in which several school records were dismantled, the Wake Forest men's and women's indoor track and field teams will compete at the 2023 ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships Thursday (Feb. 23) through Saturday (Feb. 25) at Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center in Louisville, Ky.
Events are slated to begin each day at 11 a.m. and admission is free.
The meet will be streamed via ACC Network Extra with on-air coverage beginning Thursday at 4 p.m., Friday at 11 a.m., and Saturday at 11 a.m. Additionally, ACC Network (ACCN) will re-air the final day of the competition on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 8 a.m.

Last Time Out - JDL DMR Invitational
In their final regular season meet of the 2023 indoor season, the Wake Forest men's and women's indoor track & field teams posted several top performances last Saturday at the JDL DMR Invitational at JDL Fast Track.
Graduate student Andrew White continued his stellar 2023 indoor season as the Canton, Ohio native became the first Demon Deacon in program history to break the 22m barrier in the weight throw. White tossed an impressive 22.06m, breaking his previous school record by nearly one meter.
Juniors Mason Ellis (17.87m) and Jacob Goldberg (17.74m) also had solid performances in the weight throw as they finished in third and fourth, respectively.
Wake Forest dominated the women's weight throw as freshman Sophie Perez Gonzalez (17.67m), senior Katrina Andreassen (17.66m) and freshman Casey Sullivan (14.94m) finished in first, second and third, respectively.
Highlighted by Thomas Kitchell's meet record (18.66m), the Demon Deacons finished first, second and third in the men's shot put behind strong performances from Ellis and senior Connor Mathis. The Deacs also posted top marks in the women's shot put as sophomore Ashlyn Giles and Sullivan took the top two spots.
Of note, Wake Forest won four events between the two programs. Additionally, the Demon Deacons recorded 10 top-three finishes.

Familiar Faces
Wake Forest is building upon a solid 2022 campaign as the Demon Deacons have returned six indoor track & field All-ACC honorees and five outdoor track & field All-ACC honorees from a season ago between the men's and women's programs.
This season, the Wake Forest men's track & field team has returned First-Team All-American and ACC Champion Thomas Vanoppen. Last season, Vanoppen placed fourth in the 1500m at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, becoming the first Wake Forest outdoor All-American since Robert Heppenstall in 2018 and the first 1500m All-American since Kyle Graves in 2015.
In addition to Vanoppen, the Demon Deacon men return Zach Facioni who collected Second-Team All-American honors a season ago, along with three indoor All-ACC honorees (Thomas Kitchell, Andrew White and Rynard Swanepoel).
For the women, Wake Forest returns Anna Bush and Emma Soderstrom as they both earned All-American honorable mention honors last season at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, finishing 18th in the heptathlon and 23rd in the high jump, respectively. Additionally, the Deacs return All-ACC selection Addison Berry.
