GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wake Forest junior guard Jewel Spear earned All-ACC honors, as announced by the league office Tuesday night.
This is the second-consecutive season she has been named as an All-ACC player and she was also named to the All-ACC Freshman team two years ago. After being named a 2022 First Team All-ACC player and being a member of the Preseason All-ACC team, Spear was placed on the second team this season.
The Colony, Texas native has had another stellar season, leading the team in scoring and finishing sixth in the conference with 16.0 points per game this season. Spear tallied nine games of 20 or more points this year and led the Deacs in scoring during 16 games this season.
The junior guard continues to leave her legacy with multiple memorable performances this season including against Minnesota, Virginia Tech, Louisville and Clemson:
Game Winner in Minnesota
In the ACC/Big Ten Challenge with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game, a ball screen at the top of the key freed up Spear who hit a game-winning three with 3.0 seconds remaining to lift the Deacs to a road win over the Gophers. The triple put the Demon Deacons up 62-59 and eventually won the game. She finished with a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
The Immaculate Quarter
At No. 12 Virginia Tech, Spear put on a memorable performance in the third quarter to help Wake Forest climb within one possession. Spear had an immaculate 10 minutes as she did not miss from the field, hitting all five of her attempts from the field including three from behind the arc. She also knocked down all five of her free throws to complete the perfect shooting quarter. It was the second-highest scoring quarter in her career, nearly tying her 20-point fourth quarter against East Tennessee State in her 40-point performance as a sophomore. With the help of Spear's third quarter effort, she netted a then ACC-best 27 points.
Historic Night in The Joel
Against Louisville, she tallied a season-high 34 points, while shooting 8-of-15 from the field and 4-of-7 beyond the arc. Her 34 points mark the second-highest total in her career and most against a conference opponent, trailing just her 40-point game against ETSU as a sophomore. The Deacs came up clutch at the charity stripe down the stretch, finishing the game plus-11 in free throw makes. Spear ended the night going 14-of-16 from the line to lead. Her makes and attempts from the free throw line were both career highs. The performance clinched the Deacs first ever victory over the Cardinals.
A Comeback to Remember
Trailing by nine with 4:30 left in the game against Clemson, the Deacs turned it on down the stretch, ending regulation on a 13-4 scoring run to send the game into overtime. Spear accounted for nine of those points. After going into that stretch 3-of-14 from three, Spear nailed three consecutive threes to help tie the game at the end of regulation. The Demon Deacons were led in the score column by Spear as she tallied 29 points, while shooting 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Spear's 29-point outing marked her third-highest scoring output of the season.
Sunday, she moved into the top-15 of career points in program history, currently standing 14th all-time with 1,287 points. Additionally, she ranks third in program history with 226 career threes. She also is fourth in program history in points per game with 15.3.
