Hosting their first home conference action of the season, the No. 14 Demon Deacons dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 23 Florida State.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 14 ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team (15-6, 2-1 ACC) battled with No. 23 Florida State (9-4, 2-1 ACC) throughout Friday's home ACC opener before falling by a final of 4-2 at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.

Wake Forest secured the doubles point in a 6-2 decision for Jurabek Karimov and Luciano Tacchi over Florida State's Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Barnaby Smith. The Deacs' initial advantage in doubles came from the No. 30 pairing of Filippo Moroni and Juan Lopez de Azcona who won their seventh match together this spring.

In singles, the two ranked sides battled throughout first sets up and down the courts at the Wake Forest Tennis Center before Florida State eventually secured the victory with four wins.

The Deacs action in singles was highlighted by a top-five victory for No. 21 ranked Melios Efstathiou, as he took down No. 4 ranked Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc 6-3, 6-3.

Wake Forest will remain at home for the conclusion of this weekend's action, hosting No. 60 Miami and Coastal Carolina on Sunday.

How It Happened

  • Moroni/Lopez de Azcona took a 3-0 lead on Court 1 to open doubles play.

    • First and second doubles remained deadlocked at 2-2 and 3-3, respectively.

  • The duo in first doubles took the first win of the day for Wake Forest, 6-1, just a few minutes before Karimov/Tacchi clinched the doubles point for the Deacs with a 6-2 win in second doubles.

  • All six courts were tightly-contested over the first 30 minutes of singles action, as every match was either tied or within a game.

  • Thomson (Court 5), Moroni (Court 2) and Efstathiou (Court 1) each took the first set, 6-3, all within minutes of each other as the Deacons edged closer to victory.

  • Efstathiou claimed the first Wake Forest point in singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over No. 4 Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc.

    • Entering the match, Cornut-Chauvinc was 9-1 in singles competition this season. The junior has also earned three ACC Player of the Week awards.

  • Florida State, however, would take a 3-2 lead securing victories on Courts 4, 5 and 6.

  • Moroni and Thomson battled to a third set on courts two and five, respectively, but ultimately fell as the Seminoles took a 3-2 lead with two courts up for grabs.

  • The Seminoles would secure their victory just before 8 p.m., as Youcef Rihane won a battle of two top-110 competitors over Wake Forest's Jurabek Karimov
