The Demon Deacons moved up the leaderboard on the final day of the Valspar Collegiate with the help of big rounds from upperclassmen Michael Brennan and Mark Power.
PALM CITY, Fla. – Like has been the case in previous tournaments, the Wake Forest men's golf team made their move on the final day of the tournament, carding the second-lowest score to par of the season Tuesday at the Valspar Collegiate in Palm City, Fla.
Led by the leadership of senior Mark Power and junior Michael Brennan, the Demon Deacons got the day off to a hot start as every player in the lineup was par or better in the first nine holes of the round.
Brennan and Power continued their impressive play into the final nine holes as both were 2-under par in the final nine holes. By the end of the day, Brennan carded a 66 (-5) and Power turned in a 67 (-4) as they both moved up the leaderboard.
Power was the highest finisher on the individual leaderboard, tying for 14th as he moved up 14 spots Tuesday. Brennan tied for 20th and moved up 20 spots on the individual leaderboard.
As a team, the Demon Deacons, carded their best round of the week and one of the best rounds in the field, turning in a 275 (-9). Only the 10-under third round in the Battle of Briar's Creek was a better round in relation to par this season. Freshman Andrew McLauchlan and sophomore Scotty Kennon pitched in even par rounds to help turn in the impressive final round.
Wake Forest moved up two spots and tied for ninth in the tournament with a 54-hole score of 847 (-5), finishing ahead of No. 18 Georgia Southern, No. 26 Northwestern and No. 48 Houston while also being tied with No. 37 Duke.
The Deacs have tended to play their best golf in the final round of the tournament this season with no four of the five lowest rounds coming in the final rounds of tournaments this season. This including the Battle at Briar's Creek where Wake Forest fought back from eight strokes down going into the final day to pull ahead and win by nine stokes, a 17-stroke difference:

From Coach Haas:
"We led this nationally elite field in under par holes, lead the field an Eagles made, but we're just too erratic. We are a very young team that's got to go through some growing pains before they get better. I think we had the third or fourth best round today and moved a few spots. We are hopefully peaking at the right time for Calusa Pines next week and then the ACC Championship. I am proud to be a Deacon." - head coach Jerry Haas
