WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest baseball team will host an Epilepsy Awareness Game inside David F. Couch Ballpark on Saturday, April 8 against NC State, benefiting the Epilepsy Alliance of North Carolina.
"Reading Marc's book, 'She Danced With Lightning', is to fall in love with Anna and marvel at her toughness, resilience and passion for life," said head coach Tom Walter. "At Wake Forest, our Athletic Department motto is Developing Champions. Anna is the ultimate life champion. We are honored to partner with Anna, the Palmieri family and the Epilepsy Alliance of North Carolina to support such a worthwhile cause."
"Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders, affecting 1 in 26 people," said Pat Gibson, Executive Director, Epilepsy Alliance of North Carolina. "Any one of us, at any age, at any time, can develop seizures, for any number of reasons. With appropriate treatment, the majority of people with epilepsy do well and are able to lead normal, productive lives. However, about 25 to 30 percent of those with epilepsy have a more difficult time and our present treatments may not work as well for them. The Epilepsy Alliance NC is dedicated to supporting those impacted by epilepsy and confronting the spectrum of challenges created by seizures. The Alliance is extremely grateful to Coach Tom Walter and his baseball team for the support they are giving us with this fundraiser, the proceeds of which will go to our Epilepsy Medication Fund. Assuring that no one with epilepsy in our states goes without medication is one of the Alliance's top priorities."
"When I had the honor of having the book about my life with my daughter's epilepsy accepted to the beautiful Festival of Books and Authors last fall, I never imagined I'd be back in Winston-Salem for this incredible event," said Marc Palmieri, Wake Forest baseball alum. "Coach Walter brought the entire team and staff to a book signing event the Epilepsy Alliance of North Carolina set up. The day I was returning to New York, Coach Walter approached me with the idea of this game. His invitation to throw out the first pitch was especially exciting, since last time I stood on that mound I got knocked around by Duke.
"Wake Forest Baseball has been directly affected by this insidious condition. We have players with family members that live with epilepsy and we just recently lost a former player to it, for instance. It's a great honor for me to be part of raising epilepsy awareness with my book, but there will be nothing as special as this game, this event, and the deep pride and gratitude I have at being part of the great Deacon baseball family. Coach Walter, this elite team and the entire program are not only raising money for a great cause, but they are bringing a moment of great comfort and consolation to so many."
The Demon Deacons will don light lavender jerseys when they hit the diamond on Saturday, April 8 against NC State. These special-edition jerseys include the epilepsy awareness ribbon on the back.
Fans will have the opportunity to bid on the special-edition, game-worn jerseys through GoDeacs.com until 11:59 p.m. on the night of the game. The starting bid for each jersey is $100.
