Demon Deacons Prepped for Rematch with Syracuse in ACC Tournament Opener
3/7/2023 11:37:00 AM | Men's Basketball
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The No. 9 seeded Wake Forest men's basketball team will face the No. 8 seeded Syracuse Orange for the second time in five days in the second round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon (March 8).
Tipoff is set for Noon and the matchup will air live on ESPN. You can also purchase tickets here to catch the action in-person.
The rematch comes just four days after the two sides battled in the 2022-23 regular-season finale on March 4. Acting as the host during its Senior Night, the Orange finished victorious in a 72-63 decision. Wednesday will be only the second all-time meeting between the Demon Deacons and Syracuse in ACC tournament play, as the Orange won the first matchup back in 2018.
In the most recent meeting between the Deacs and the Orange, Wake Forest held Syracuse to a season-low two three-pointers for a season-low 14.3 percent. The Deacon defense caused 14 Syracuse turnovers, the third-most for the Orange this season. The Deacs' 83.3 percentage from the free-throw line was the third-best performance from the charity stripe of ACC opponents against Syracuse this season. Wake Forest's 27 defensive rebounds were the third-most for an ACC team against Syracuse this season.
Wake Forest has been a top-three team in scoring offense within the league all year long, while also being one of the ACC's best three-point shooting units.
Fresh off an all-around performance to cap off the regular season, Tyree Appleby enters his first ACC postseason as the conference's leader in points, assists, and minutes played. The Jacksonville, Arkansas native was also voted to the All-ACC First Team, announced Monday evening (March 6) by the league office.
The winner of Wednesday's game will face No. 1 seed Miami (24-6, 15-5 ACC) at Noon on Thursday. That game will air live on ESPN or ESPN2.
