No. 2 Deacs Power Past App State for 10-4 Midweek Victory

4/11/2023 10:08:00 PM | Baseball

A five-run fifth inning and shutdown performances from the Demon Deacon bullpen propelled Wake Forest to its 29th win of the season on Tuesday night.

BOONE, N.C. – The No. 2 Wake Forest baseball team powered past App State on Tuesday night, defeating the Mountaineers, 10-4, inside Smith Stadium.

The Demon Deacons (29-4, 12-2 ACC) are off to the program's best start through 33 games since 1950.  Additionally, Wake Forest leads the ACC in conference wins while tying for the most overall wins among league foes with the Cavaliers.

In addition to its winning record in conference play over the last two seasons, Wake Forest has found success in non-conference competition.

Dating back to last year, the Deacs hold a 42-6 record against non-ACC teams. Wake Forest has outscored opponents 487-172 in those games.

Tuesday marked the Deacs' 17th non-conference win in 2023 as Wake Forest has outscored non-ACC opponents by a margin of 226-57 this year.

Trailing 3-2 , Wake Forest's offense exploded for five runs on four hits, a hit-by-pitch and walk to jump out to a 7-3 lead in the top of the fifth. The Demon Deacons' 10th inning with at least five runs was capped off by a 475-foot two-run home run from Danny Corona.

Brock Wilken got the fifth-inning scoring started with an RBI-double, his second extra-base hit of the night, before Justin Johnson fired his second RBI-single of the game. Just prior to Corona's third home run of the season, Jake Reinisch registered a sacrifice fly, his second run driven in of the night.

Wilken continued his big day at the plate with a solo long fly to left field in the next inning, his 15th HR of the season. The solo shot marked the Valrico, Fla. native's 55th home run of his career, moving him into a tie with Jake Austin (1989-92) for the second-most long flies by a Demon Deacon ever.

Pierce Bennett helped Wake Forest reach double-digits in the eighth with a two-out, two-RBI single to conclude the midweek scoring for the Deacs. The base hit also extended the redshirt junior's hit streak to 16 games.

Wake Forest's bullpen shut down App State's offense as Cole Roland, Joe Ariola, Chase Walter, Derek Crum, William Ray, Michael Massey and Camden Minacci allowed zero earned runs and just two hits over the final seven innings.

Cole Roland retired all six batters he faced in the third and fourth to earn his first win of the season, highlighted by a pair of strikeouts. Joe Ariola induced the opening pair of outs in the fifth before Chase Walter produced the final out of the frame with a ground out.

Walter and Crum combined for a scoreless sixth before Ray and Massey retired the Mountaineers in order with two strikeouts apiece in the seventh and eighth.

Five Deacs drove in two runs while four notched multi-hit performances, led by Wilken with three extra-base knocks. Overall, eight batters notched a hit in the midweek victory.

Wake Forest received clutch at-bats all night, producing a .333 average (4-12) with two outs and a .417 average (5-12) with runners in scoring position.

How It Happened
  • Wake Forest jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a two-out rally consisting of RBI-singles from Justin Johnson and Jake Reinisch
    • Lucas Costello tallied Wake Forest's first base knock of the ballgame, firing a single to right field.
    • After App State caught Wake Forest trying to steal second, Brock Wilken launched a double through the right center gap before Pierce Bennett drew a walk.
    • Johnson's base hit brought home Wilken before Reinisch's single brought home Bennett.
  • App State cut Wake Forest's lead (2-1) in half with an RBI-single in the bottom of the first.
    • Reed Mascolo stranded a pair with an inning-ending strikeout, his second of the inning, to open his eighth start of the season.
    • After the first two Mountaineers reached base with a single and hit by pitch, Mascolo fanned his first batter of the game for the first out.
    • A wild pitch placed runners on second and third with one out. Undaunted, Mascolo induced a groundout to third base, where Wilken fired the ball to home for the second out before catching an App State batter looking to end the frame.
  • A two-run homer gave App State a 3-2 lead after two full innings.
    • The Deacs ended the inning by catching a runner trying to score from first.
  • Reinisch notched a two-out walk, but a strikeout ended the opening frame of the third.
  • Cole Roland took over on the mound in the bottom of the third and produced a perfect three-up, three-down inning with a ground out, fly out and strikeout.
  • Roland returned in the fourth and retired the side in order once again, forcing back-to-back fly outs before talling another inning-ending punch out.
  • Wake Forest regained the lead in the top of the fifth with five runs on four hits, a hit-by-pitch and walk. The Demon Deacons' 10th inning with at least five runs was capped off by a 475-foot two-run home run from Danny Corona.
    • Costello led off the inning with his second single of the game before Wilken laced his second double of the game down the left field line to score the junior.
    • After Bennett was hit by a pitch, Johnson fired an RBI-single, his second of the game, to score Wilken.
    • After a sacrifice fly from Reinisch plated Bennett, Corona's third home run of the season capped off the big inning.
  •  Joe Ariola and Chase Walter combined to toss a zero in the bottom of the fifth as Wake Forest took its 7-3 lead to the sixth.
    • Ariola induced back-to-back groundouts to open the inning. Walter took over with runners on first and second and forced a groundout to end the frame.
  • Wilken continued his hot day at the plate in the sixth, launching a solo home run to left field to increase Wake Forest's advantage to 8-3.
  • Walter and Derek Crum continued the momentum on the mound, notching a shutdown frame in the bottom of the sixth.
    • Walter fanned the first batter of the inning before inducing a groundout with a runner on second.
    • Crum stranded three Mountaineer base runners with a groundout to Johnson at second base.
  • Reinisch posted his second single to open the seventh, but a strikeout and double play concluded the inning.
  • William Ray notched a perfect three-up, three-down inning with a pair of punchouts and a fly out as Wake Forest maintained its 8-3 lead into the eighth.
  • Another two-out rally in the eighth extended Wake Forest's lead to seven (10-3) as Bennett notched a two-RBI single to right field to score Wilken (intentional walk) and Hawke (error).
  • Michael Massey blanked the Mountaineers in the eighth, highlighted by a pair of strikeouts.
  • Jack Winnay drew a one-out walk and advanced to third following a stolen base and wild pitch. Lee walked to place runners on the corners but the next two Deacs were retired to end Wake Forest's final offensive opportunity.
  • App State plated an unearned run thanks to a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth. Camden Minacci responded by forcing a pop up in foul territory to clinch the 10-4 victory.
Words from Walter
"Good win on the road. Any time you beat a good program on the road, it's a good day. I was really pleased with our bullpen today. Cole Roland comes in and gets six big outs and we pieced it together from there. We had a couple really good bridge innings. Chase came in, got a big out before getting a couple more big outs. Derek Crum got an out behind him. Will Ray was really good. Massey was really good. Nas got us the last three outs. It was a really good day for our bullpen. Offensively, Brock Wilken was the story today. He had a really good day. It was good to see Jake Reinisch swing the bat well then Danny Corona's big home run. Offensively, those three guys carried us today."
